I don''t think it''s nice when people call diamonds cute. My bet is that they''re doing it to be passive aggressive.

I was at a friend''s birthday party last weekend, and a friend of a friend asked to see my (2.1 ct) engagement ring. She said ''oh, I think it''s so sweet when people have modest rings...so unpretentious.''

Was she being a jerk and commenting on the much-larger-than-average size of your ring? Or is 2.1 carat considered ''cute'' in your social circle and she was actually trying to pay you a compliment of sorts?

She is just showing her jealousy or insecurity.
I was in Macy''s once (which was my first mistake) and a saleswoman in her fifties grabbed my hand and said ''Oh, what a lovely, simple ring. I love it when people choose small, tasteful engagement rings.'' She seemed to be very genuine, so I didn''t take offense to it. I was just surprised because my center stone is 2 cts--if she thinks that is small, I''d love to see what she thinks of as being normal!
It''s also set on an eternity band, so there''s a lot of bling going on, so the ''simple'' comment perplexed me as well.

Lilylover, you actually have my absolutely ideal ring, with exactly the size of centre stone I wantIt is dreamy and I can''t imagine anyone NOT thinking it is beautiful.![]()
I wouldn''t necessarily take it as an insult - some people do just have a very limited vocabulary and ''cute'' is an all-purpose word to describe something they like. Sometimes people are being snarky, but that pretty much always stems from jealousy and/or insecurity.
Don''t let it bother you.
hahaha, earlier I almost posted "cute" in the SMTR forum and then remembered this thread. Never again will I say that word unless I''m talking about a kitten or puppy.Date: 7/21/2009 10:40:28 PM

I used to work at a clothing store and we definitely overused the word ''cute'', so I''m sure I''ve used it inappropriately once or twice. ''Cute top! Cute haircut! Cute shoes!'' You get the idea.I''m sure they didn''t mean it in a bad way...unless they did, in which case, they''re passive aggressive and pathetic so I wouldn''t worry about it!![]()
GREAT question! I have NO idea! It doesn't bother me that much. I have the three (so farDate: 7/21/2009 11:13:41 AM

I've always wondered about colored stone engagement rings. Do you think that people don't know your rings are engagement rings? I'm guessing it doesn't bother you much, since you don't like diamonds and you designed a ring you love! But do people's reactions ever bother you?Date: 7/21/2009 1:33:20 AM

Maybe I can understand.
As a guy there is something I have that I hope is never called, 'cute'.
I don't get it either lily. I haven't gotten that (seeing as how my erings are colored stones though, I don't know that people know they are engagement rings) but I would be irritated too. It's such a placating word. Like 'nice'. There is just no imagination there.
Regardless, cute is not a word for an engagement ring. Unless maybe if it's a heart. Or perhaps the infamous Mickey Mouse ering/wedding band combo....![]()
I knew a girl who was proposed to with an amethyst, and no one seemed to understand that it was an engagement ring -- it bothered her so much she even cried over it! (sorry to threadjack..)
I agree!!!! Well said Gwen.....Date: 7/21/2009 8:40:27 AM

Yes, it''s happened to me (about 1/2 carat diamond on a size 9 finger), which bothers me a little bit because my ring is an heirloom and is what it is!
Worse though, in my opinion, is when people here on PS comment and say a diamond is ''cute'' because they consider it small. C''mon, as fellow jewelry lovers, we should really know better than to sound condescending to someone''s lovely sparkly, which may be big to them!![]()
I agree Kareyn! I use AWESOME quite a bit to reply to jewelry postings....I truly mean it when I say something is AWESOME, but I agree that the word is overused on bland things....I''ll come up with more interesting things to say....THANK YOU!Date: 7/21/2009 12:21:31 AM

hi lilylover
cute is one of those words - ridiculously overused by the vocabulary impaired. don''t let it bother you.
it''s like ''awesome''. i''ve heard the most bland and dull things described as awesome; ''we had hamburgers for dinner tonight - it was awesome!'' / ''i had my first driving lesson today - it was awesome'' / ''my IQ almost breaks 100 - awesome!!''
lily, people have described my australian accent as cute! trust me, i am not a ''cute'' woman, so i never get where that comes from.
don''t let it bother you - it''a a bit like swearing; people use it when they have no other words in their arsenal.
your ring is delightful, delicious, delicate, icy, sparkling, mesmerizing, romantic, beautiful, elegant, classy, captivating...and most of all...
YOURS!
congratulations![]()
Whitby, its so me. I am the vocabulary impaired. I hope OP doesn''t get mad at me because I do think her ring looks so cute on her finger but I don''t mean that her diamond is a baby diamond. Her diamond is larger than my promise ring''s diamond.Date: 7/21/2009 12:21:31 AM
