This Newbie Needs Help!!!!!!!

Hey Everyone,

I am a newbie to Pricescope although I have found this website to be quite informative. My situation is that my boyfriend of 5 years and I are beggining to search for an engagement ring

. We have settled on a Scott Kay setting. However, the diamond searching is beggining to be the problem.

We are wanting to buy a loose diamond and have been searching in brick and motar stores in the Greater Toronto Area (Canada). Although, GemScan is the appraiser of choice for most of these stores. Yet, I have been reading some posts and now iffy on GemScan. Can we purchase the diamond and take it to an independent appraiser to see if all the certs. are correct? Can we take the diamond to the appraiser after the diamond has been set in the Scott Kay setting? I'm quite confused on the whole appraising event. How much do appraisals cost? What happens if the appraisal is different than the GemScan certs.???

Also we we have found two authorized jewellery stores with the Scott Kay setting that I want located in Hamilton and in Woodbridge (Frank Damiani). Any reviews on Damiani? Will we be getting any certificates/warranties with our Scott Kay purchase? If the setting gets damaged who will take care of my ring? Will it be Scott Kay or the jewellers?

Hi,
I can not answer many of your questions, i.e. independant appraisal etc, but I can tell you I just recently upgraded my center stone. I bought it from a jeweler in the vendor''s market in the jewellery exchange. He is the first booth when you enter; it is called Josephine''s and Aziz is the man! I am sure people here are sick of me raving him, but they remade my setting etc, and it is perfect.... anyway, it is a gemscan cert, and we got a fair price, I "pricescoped" it to see! I will see if I can find the thread with my pics.... I would totally encourage you to go see him, I would think if you become serious in a stone, if you sign into some agreement, he (or any other jeweler) would allow you to purchase/ and return if the appraisal doesn''t match their appraisal....does anyone agree/disagree with that/??

Hi Diamonelle,

If you were living in the USA, then I''d recommend finding a jeweler through the American Gem Society''s website under "locate a jeweler." There must be something similar to this list in Canada...

If your setting is damaged, it''s probably best to take it back to the jeweler that set the stone. It''s best to go to your specific jeweler with a bunch of questions in mind.

I''m no expert, but it''s better to get the appraisal before the stone is set.

Have any pics of the Scott Kay setting? We''d love to see it.

Did you buy your Scott Kay ring in Canada? If so from who did you purchase it from?. Do you get any certification to prove its a real Scott Kay ring? I know there is a Scott Kay stamp on the ring but can that be copied.

I just don''t want my bf to be scammed with the setting and the diamond purchase considering the hefty price of this investment.

Furthermore We are looking for an ideal hearts and arrows cut. Are there different types of hearts and arrows and is it visible to the eye? What should we look out for when picking out our diamond? Does the certification include H&A?

This internet vendor in your area may be a good resource for you.

Not sure about appraisers in your area...a good one will be able to perform best with an unset diamond, but if the diamond has a good enough pedigree otherwise, this may be a less critical factor, and generally, you should expect that to have the diamond first appraised before setting, more time will be involved. If time is not a factor, the unset diamond will help to optimize the work.
