I''ve lied about my jewelry - never to "improve" my standing, but only to downplay it. Sometimes its like what other posters above me have described (I am *not* talking about valuable items with complete strangers on the street!), and sometimes it''s to avoid awkward in-depth explanations and the appearance of bragging with acquaintances. No guilt either way!

Lol YES! I got my big OEC off eBay and it drives me batty what happens when I tell people that when they ask. People ask me all the time ''oh did you get that here?'' (meaning at the antique mall I work at). I''ve found it''s much better to just say ''yes''. If I say that I got it off ebay, then the conversation tends to take a weird turn, and people think it''s often OK to ask how much I paid, and so on.

I also will lie and say it''s fake sometimes if someone who gives me the heebie jeebies asks if it''s real. That''s about it though.

LOL - funny, I was hoping you''d chime in Kitten. We seem a bit alike on here personally - I also have the ''what was I thinking?'' finger tattoo (on my right hand - it''s always covered now with one ring or another) and I have the whole ''goth'' vibe going too (you said that in one of your posts that you were a goth or former goth like me)

I was reading through some of your posts (was looking for more photos of your FABULOUS 3+ carat OEC ring - I just love it) and I had wondered where it is that you work? (if you feel comfortable saying so) I live in Vancouver and come down to Seattle on a regular basis to visit my (future) in-laws. Would love to check it out some time.....

Regarding the thread I started here - I''m thinking I just might say my e-ring is an antique stone (looks like one) I''m anticipating questions about it and it will just be easier and kinda fun to fib about it (it will be a unique shape to a lot of people who have never seen one - a chunky cushion - and a ''weird'' colour - M) I know a lot of people won''t know it''s a diamond..... ''Oh, it''s an antique'' will just be an easy answer, you know?

That''s too funny that I''m not the only one with the Regrettable Finger Tat! I have NO idea what I was thinking... well, considering my 18 year old self, I probably wasn''t! Oh yes- I still am all too gothy for my own good probably... you''ll have to pry my stompy boots off my cold dead feets.

It sounds like we have very, very similar taste; your e-ring sounds absolutely perfect to me

I work in Snohomish... it''s about 40 minutes north (and slightly east) of Seattle. My husband and I actually bought the antique mall from his dad this Jan. If you google "antique mall" we''re the first result; definitely, if you ever come shopping for antiques in Snohomish, say hi! I adore Vancouver... it''s the place my husband and I go when we have only a weekend to get away usually; it''s been almost a year since we''ve been up there last though. Gotta renew the passport!

I have to admit I''d probably fib and say my e-ring was antique in your position

In casual conversation with strangers about stuff like that, I do sometimes go for the "white lie of least resistance"... sometimes it''s easier than explaining "Yes, it''s an antique STYLE but not really antique, etc etc." After having about a million of this type of conversation about my ring, I often just say "Yes it''s old" when I know that they mean the setting, which is a new one but the stone is antique... and if I explain that their eyes WILL glaze over.

I sometimes forget whether my e-ring is 1.56 or 1.58, so I may have switched those up once or twice. I still can't remember...
Oh meresal you POOOOOOR POOOOOR baby!!!!!!! Your e-ring is SO LARGE you can't even remember the size.....lol

I have, but, like others it was to downplay.

The set that I wear is average for my peers in my hometown, but seems much flashier where I live now. Plus, I have size 4.5 fingers so a 1.6 round and a signed pieces eternity band give me excellent finger coverage! Several patient''s parents have looked at my left hand and then asked me directly what my husband does for a living. To that I reply "a teacher." They then look baffled, so I lie and tell them it is a family ring. (Sure, my new family!) It is an antique so it''s very believable. I also use that line when patient''s parents ask about size, etc. I''ve found that saying it is a family ring makes them lose interest quickly. (I''m not entirely sure why - but it is definitely true!) I also told a cashier once that it was fake.

No one in my real life gets being so interested in jewelry education and only one friend of mine played a large role in her e-ring selection. Therefore I usually don''t mention that DH and my sister chose my particular e-ring because it is the one I told my sister I wanted! I let them believe he found it himself.

Thanks everyone! A lot of these made me laugh - especially "my husband has no idea how much jewellery he has bought me over the years!" LOL. I guess so many of the people on here are knowledgeable about jewellery and have some gorgeous pieces so..... nothing to fib about (sorry, I shouldn''t have used the word "lie". It''s odd but I think it has a much more negative connotation in the US than it does in Canada. That''s been my experience anyways..... Hope I didn''t offend anyone! Was meant to be lighthearted......)

Kitten - I will try to stop in on my next trip to the States. I''m sure my boyfriend would LOVE it (he SO would not - lol) Maybe I can dump him at a nearby casino for a few hours......

Never. Personally I think it''s rather sad for people to lie about their jewelry. There is another forum where simulants are discussed and some of the posters are concerned about attempting to have their fakes pass for real.

IMO if you buy a fake, then wear it and deal with it honestly. Why lie and then worry about being found out? Seems like it would be much easier just to be honest.

As to my own diamonds, I''m very open. Several were purchased second hand at great prices. I''m certainly not ashamed of having the discernment to buy a great stone at a steal

I have lied and told people that I don''t know how much it costs when they''ve (rudely) asked, when I''m the one who picked everything out. That''s about it, though...most people don''t ask me much about my ring, actually! (As far as details go, that is.)

I have lied. But, I lied and told people that it wasn''t real or if people have asked the price, I have told them it cost less that what I actually paid./it''s worth, I have even told people that it wasn''t real.

Not to too many people, but to my mom and some family and some friends.

I have lied about not just jewelery, but about bag purchases as well.

I guess I am embarassed to let people know how much I paid for something or if they have an idea of what it is worth, I always say something like, oh, I got it for really cheap or I got it for such a great deal.

I know, it''s pathetic, but I don''t want them to know how sick I am.

The other day I was using a really expensvie bag at work and my co-workers noticed it and I told them it was not real.....then I ran and hid it in a plastic bag so they would not see it the rest of the day.

I''ve lied since I sold my diamond - I tell people I sent it out to get the channel sets tightened up. I don''t know what I''ll say when they realize it''s been gone too long...hopefully I''ll have a fakey by then.

I suppose... I mostly leave information out or simplify explanations if it doesn''t seem worth sharing, or I don''t feel comfortable. Downplaying the cost/carat weight, saying my wedding band came from "a cute jewelry store in our neighborhood" instead of "tiffany" (I mean, it is a jewelry store in our neighborhood...). You know. Little white lies.

I would and have never lie about it to make it sound ''better'' than it is.
