This 9ct OEC would cure my DSS once and for all

Phoenix

My apology.

I think the grey tint from the side might be a dirty girdle reflecting in the stone. I have had a few OECs like tht, with frosted girdles that collected dirt over the years. Makes the stone look dingy. I think a faceting of the girldle would clean it up and also improve the slight areas of girdle reflecting you can see face up at some angles.

The rarity of this diamond is huge. The cut looks good enough to my eyes -- as in, with a stone so rare, you cannot be so picky about cut and desire perfection.

Other than that, until it has a GIA report the bets are off. While I appreciate buying diamonds without lab reports, in this price range I would never counsel it. And until we have a report you can't really judge the stone at all. Guessing its color from bad photos is not a useful enterprise.

My only concern is whether the color and cut will be mind clean for you. While the rarity of this diamond means you likely could sell it in the future, the market for such a diamond would be small. You would not be able to easily sell if you wanted to. So you would need to be sure.

I'm glad you chimed in, Dreamer. You're one of the experts on old stones here.

Yes, the stone is filthy. I often wonder why people don't clean their diamond and thus enhancing the way a diamond looks/ its performance, before putting up it for sale - bizarre!

Glad to hear that the grey area might be just girdle reflection. Yes, I also seem to remember that the girdle is bruted and not faceted. Do you think someone like Adam at GOG could help with that?

It is incredibly rare. I don't remember having seen a large stone like that, either in person or elsewhere. Glad to hear I shouldn't be so picky and expect absolute perfection. It makes sense to me.

I've contacted the vendor over the weekend to ask for more pics, certification etc...awaiting his reply now.

I have asked myself about its mind-cleanness too I was surprised to see myself drawn to warmer stones (being such a colour-sensitive so and so). I think the size and the beautiful old cut just drew me in. For sure, even if all the pics and cert all turn out to be ok, I'd make sure to see it again in person before committing to it.

Thank you, Dreamer.

A dirty bruted girdle will create that grey look. It can apparently be cleaned with acid, or refaceting the girdle. Jon and Adam could do it, but they may not offer that service for a stone they do not own. You would need to check. Singlestone does offer repolishing and rehab for old stones. Insurance would be a pickle during that process, it would be hard to get. not sure if your own private insurance will cover the diamond during any work on the wheel (repolish, faceting the girdle).

ETA: If the vendor is unsetting the stone to send to GIA, ask him/her to clean the girdle before hand! Maybe even facet or repolish the stone. Do it on his/her dime and time, not yours! They should do that for such a huge purchase.

Hey Phoenix, I immediately thought about you when I heard on the radio that Kanye just proposed to Kim K. with a 15-carat diamond. So you have a LOT of catching up to do!! ;) Your 9-carat would be a pebble next that one.  It's all about perspective, right?

I knew crazy Phoenix was up to something !! ...She have been too quiet lately. I knew a category 9 ct hurricane was coming!...

Update: It's extremely unlikely I will be getting this diamond! :blackeye: :((

The vendor replied to my email and he's not going to take any pics for me (didn't give me a reason, just flat out said no). He didn't respond to my request to have the stone sent to GIA to be certified, but "guaranteed" it to be "at least" K Si1. Yeah right!

Thank you, everyone, for chiming in. ForteKitty, Dreamer, CharmyPoo, Arkieb1, Hera, SB621 et al.. I'd def come back here to ask more advice should I come across another antique stone. Vintagelover, I already have two offers for the 3ct (one at just below $60k for cash several weeks ago and another close to $80k for trade-in a few months ago), but thank you though.

Sorry to hear this. If he's not willing to send photo's and to have it looked at by GIA there is probably something fishy going on. He might feel you are a too well informed customer.

Good luck in your search!!

I'm disappointed in his willingness to help you make a decision about his diamond. I don't know that there's anything fishy going on, but it's not right that he's unwilling to invest what is a very small amount of money in comparison to the cost the diamond to make you feel comfortable...unless he has to reimport it back to the country from the US at a high cost to him? I can only think that he either has another offer on the table or doesn't want to be without the diamond for the amount of time it'd take to get it certified just in case he had other interest.

I know that OECs of that size are rare but something else will come along. Or if he still has it in another few months he may be more willing to be amenable to your requests.

Sensible decision Phoenix. If I had that money there is no way I would be buying such an expensive stone from him, he will likely
never sell it with that attitude. A GIA certificate is a must as you well know with that one. Would probably cost you a lot to get that and you would have to pay. Do you know roughly how much a GIA certificate would be on a 9 carat diamond?

Agree with Rhea. I remember reading though that trust is a big thing in the diamond world between dealers so maybe they
expect that. There again though they all know each others families and that so this is different when it is a customer.

Rhea, Pyramid,

I initially thought maybe it was because of the customs and taxes issue. He's based in Belgium. But he should be able to send it to GIA in the UK and back without too much hassle b/c it's all the EU. So I really don't know. The cost of GIA grading is very minimal, so that should not be it.

Maybe Pyramid is right - that he's used to dealing with other dealers; but if that's the case, why come to Singapore and have a show open to the public? Weird!

Anyway, I am not too bummed out because I wasn't looking for another diamond. This one just came along. So it wasn't meant to be, I guess {shrug}. Also, I was thinking I'd hate to put my diamonds on a firesale. It's just against my principles, ha ha! :wink2: :naughty:

Just catching up ... Wow !

There is no GIA Lab in the UK. There is a GIA company but nothing to do with diamonds or gemstones. There is a gia education uk, but it is only a link to USA on the internet.

The A in GIA stands for America that will be why there is no GIA in the UK. Most diamonds here are IGI reports anyway. Very rarely see GIA and I wonder if those are trade in from people who bought in USA.

@pyramid - a recent & still alive thread on Holly versus OEC , made me wonder, the other day, if any relevant OEC had ever been considered ... & this is how I came accross the old mention of the 9 carat would-be contender, which, I couldn't say it is the most beautiful OEC in the world (This one is ! WWW - today, @Phoenix )
