Thinking sapphire now, maybe, possibly......

Hello folks, I’m not new to pricescope but have never posted before. I’ve wanted a diamond ring for a really long time and have been reading so many different threads on here to find the best one. With that said, the ring that I want will cost a pretty penny and with 2 kids in college, not sure that’s feasible. My fiancé gave me a sapphire a few years ago as a “pre-engagement ring,” I think it’s about 5 carats. He got it when he was over in Burma, it’s an oval shaped Burmese sapphire.

So, I’ve been thinking, maybe possibly using the sapphire as the center stone and having 2 round diamonds on either side, or a halo, not exactly sure yet. It’s a beautiful stone, however, the problem is that it is very opaque. There is a beautiful blue on the outer edges but generally the stone is opaque. I really want a lighter blue transparent sapphire and I’m wondering if it can be recut. ? If I’m going to have this as my wedding ring and give up my dream of a diamond, then I want it to be the exact sapphire that I want. I’ve been looking at sapphires online, and figures, the ones that I like cost as much as the diamond!!

Is there anyone that knows a thing or two about sapphires?

Here is the sapphire. It is very dark and I’m not a big fan. Just wondering if it could be recut. I’d hate to keep it in my jewelery box, my fiancé loves sapphires and owned this for 8 years before I met him. He decided he wanted to give it to me as it’s very special to him.

I had both a blue-green spinel and a blue sapphire. The lovely silky sapphire was gifted to me by my grandfather and used to be in "my" high-school class ring I designed myself (it was very 80's!). I chipped it during normal life. The spiniel just needed a bit more life and the perimeter needed to be made more symmetrical. Neither lost much weight...just a tiny bit.

From the photo the sapphire has some real character but it's hard to say whether it would re-cut to what your are expecting/hoping. It's a little over-dark and that could potentially be lightened up by re-cutting. Surface has good luster. Hard to say from the photo if the opacity is due to clarity characteristics or just from the inky extinction. It almost looks like semi-cabochon on top. You need to get a consultation from a trusted and skilled cutter who can communicate accurately what you should expect from a re-cut.
Personally, I like the stone and ring as it is. That is, if the photo is indicative of real life. But if you can lighten it, it will be even prettier. The color around the edge is primo.

The color around the edge is what Im hoping to get. The pic above is an example of what I’m looking for. I’m going to get a lab analysis first.

I’m no sapphire expert, but I’m learning.
I would not get the sapphire recut. I don’t think it’s a good idea to sacrifice its size in the hope that it will lighten up. I think any “lightening up” will be minimal.
Here are my two, also deep toned. These are cut as Round Brillant which would be the best cut “for light”. Still deep toned.
And finally, a certain Duchess of Cambridge (and Princess Diana originally) has a likewise deep toned oval blue sapphire and there’s hardly a woman in the world who would say “no” if it came their way.
I say embrace your beauty’s deep tone, I would put a halo of white diamonds around and let the silky, slinky inky blue, with occasional flashes of vivid blue be just as nature intended.

Yes, you want to make sure it's not a synthetic before you start down the recut path. If the material is very clean it can be lightened by shallowing it out. But my guess it it won't be as light as the inspiration ring. If so, the stone would end up being much smaller.
