Thinking about upgrading my oval stone to a round

Hi everyone!

I'm trying to gain clarity on the percentages, angles, and other specifications associated with a round cut. I've played around with the HCA tool and have identified a few diamonds that are GIA XXX and score relatively well.

The diamond I'm looking at in particular is a 2.21 round I VS2 depth is 62.5% table is 56% crown angle is 35.5 and pavilion angle is 40.6. This diamond scores a 1.4 on the HCA tool....

Does this sound like a good diamond? I have not seen the stone but I will send my jeweler the GIA number pulled directly from their database and hopefully look at the stone in person sometime next week.

I have a few other stones in mind that score a little over a 2.0...

Any feedback or insight is appreciated!

Identified another stone
2.25 J VS1 depth 61.8% table 59% crown angle is 35 and pavilion angle is 41. HCA score is 1.9....

I personally would want to see an idealscope or aset image on these stones as added assurance. It might help you decide between the two.
The crown angle on the first one is a little high (I actually like this combo but others may not).
With the second stone the crown/pavilion angle combo is not as complimentary as it could be (why I'd want the extra images).

However, if your jeweler can bring both of them in and you can look at them side by side along with a well cut stone then you can pick out
which you prefer (remember to look at them in all different kinds of lighting and outside of the jewelers lighting).

Thank you for your input. I’m not sure if my jeweler can provide an idealscope or aset image. I will ask about that.

What is considered a well cut stone?? I know I need to look at the percentages and angles. Is the HCA tool useful? I found two diamonds that scored a 2.1 (I think) and 2.4 on the tool but I’m not sure if the diamond specs are ok..

I am only just seeing this thread. How did this all play out? Did you end up switching to a round?

Because buying a diamond can be such a mine field, I would stay below a 2 on the HCA scale - it just makes things a lot easier and it's a reliable tool.

I'm not a fan of large tables - I think a small table is more elegant, so I like 55-57%, and preferably 55 or 56. To maximize spread, I, personally, look at 62.2% or below for depth and I prefer 61.8 or below if I can get it.

Keep your crown angle between 34 and 35, and your pavilion angle between 40.5 and 41 - between 40.6 and 40.8 being your best bets.

Do you have a budget? If you'd like to share it with us, we can start looking for you. Do you want to buy in person, or is it ok to buy online? If it has to be in person, pls share roughly where you live so we can point you in the right direction. For myself, tho, I prefer buying online; it's easier and the choice is better.
