Diamond star thrills astronomers:

By Dr David Whitehouse
BBC News Online science editor

A diamond that is almost forever

Twinkling in the sky is a diamond star of 10 billion trillion trillion carats, astronomers have discovered.

The cosmic diamond is a chunk of crystallised carbon, 4,000 km across, some 50 light-years from the Earth in the constellation Centaurus.

It's the compressed heart of an old star that was once bright like our Sun but has since faded and shrunk.

Astronomers have decided to call the star "Lucy" after the Beatles song, Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.

I went to read the BBC article.

The graphic posted there is hilarious.

The inside core of the diamond is already FACETED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and it''s shape is round???

Wonder how much funding we paid of our tax dollars to learn this info.

While the technical analysis could be factual, the existence of a faceted diamond core is ridiculous.

It is interesting that the study claims the core is ''mostly carbon"..... wonder what other elements are present that might affect the color? Considering this the core being colorless is highly improbable.

Maybe the right question is - Did Whiteflash cut this stone?
