''Thin'' Girdle of 4.0 ct and above emerald cut

Good Evening,
Would a ''thin'' girdle (by ASG) of an emerald cut, 4.0 ct and above, be a problem for setter and wearer?
Does it mean that it may be chipped during setting?
Would it require more care and precaution when wearing?
Any settings to avoid? Any recommendations to bring out the best?
Are there any other issues related to large emerald cut diamonds?
What is the cut off for nearly colorless when we are talking about emerald cuts?
Are you an emerald cut lover? Or not? Both views highly appreciated.

If you are concerned, bring the diamond to a trusted appraiser to see whether it has any integrity problems (from inclusions and/or girdle thinness). From John's comments in the above thread, I think thin girdles are fine. It's a problem when you get to the extremely thins. However, diamonds, regardless of the girdle size may chip (despite the unlikelihood)... it just takes knocking it at the right place (but again, generally highly unlikely).

I would appraise the diamond, insure it and wear it as you please.

In terms of what You perceive as colorless, it really depends on you - and what you have surrounding the diamond (other higher color side stones, set in white or yellow metals, etc.) At that size, color will show more readily because you'll have more diamond to see through. However, my cutoff is an H in a 2.5 carat stone (and really, I just saw the very lightest of tints (not yellow) indoors in an I color). For you, you'll just have to see some in person and decide what you like.

There was a J color five carat cushion in the SMTB forum recently. From the pictures, which are admittedly a poor representation of colour, the J looks completely white.

Normally should not be an issue. I take it you mean AGS? If you are concerned, ask an independant appraiser to inspect the stone for you. As for colour in such a large stone I would say GIA H colour or higher could be an initial range to look in unless you have seen some large I or J colour EC''s in person. As for other issues, these shapes can show inclusions more easily than others to stick to VS or above for clarity.

And yes I love EC''s and am very interested in all aspects of these diamonds and the cut qualities.

RE: Color. A few of us on here have J colored Emerald cuts. Mine is 2.75, another poster, EmeraldCutQuest has a 2.75, and I believe FranFine''s is around a 3ct. All are J''s. I believe the pictures I have posted are a good representation of what the stone looks like in person. In some lighting you can see some slight warmth from the side.

That being said, if I ever had the opportunity to upgrade my stone in the future I''d have no problem picking a larger stone of the same color. In my experience some EC''s show more body color face up than others. You could luck out and get one that is pretty darn white or you could get the opposite. This is why it is so important to see these stones in person before you buy. When we were looking for a diamond we saw quite a few EC''s of J color that I would have never chosen however we also saw G''s, H''s, and I''s that I could notice the tint in as well.
