Last night at a diamond remount sale I bought a gorgeous tsavorite and picked out a thick gold solitaire mount for it. They said I could probably pick up the ring tonight. I wandered out to the mall about 7:30 and went in to the store. The salesgirl couldn''t find it so went back to the jeweler and came back to tell me they hadn''t mounted it yet but she''d do it tonight. I told her no rush, don''t hurry it but she said since it was a custom piece from the remount sale she would get it done tonight. She called me about an hour later and told me the jeweler broke my stone. They are ordering in a new stone but I think I will go back tomorrow and get my money back. I know I paid more for it than I would pay online but it was nice to see it in person. It was a .91 ct modified square.

I have been shopping for a 1/2 emerald cut diamond anyway so maybe the tsavorite ring just wasn''t meant to be.

Oh that''s so horrible Marcy. I''m so sorry.

Make sure you don''t go back there for any more benchwork.

Bummer...

So sorry about your tsavorite. You aren''t going to give the new one a chance?

Thanks Tourmaline Lover. This is her third strike so I am definitely not going back there. I like the store because they usually give me 40% to 45% of but it''s still higher than I can get online.

Chrono, I don''t think so. The same jeweler mounted my mint garnet in a pendant and it fell out the night I picked it up so I had to take it back. I also turned in trillion mint garnets for studs and she was afraid of breaking them so sent them to another store to mount after setting on them for a few weeks. I think she might not be as experienced as I''d like.

What a shame Marcy!

Oh that sucks I''m so sorry to hear they wrecked your nice stone...

Oh I''m so sorry marcy!! I hope you are able to find another one that you like but please don''t take it back there!

Urgh...sounds like the benchperson''s work is sloppy and possibly inexperienced with gemstones.

No wonder I still pay a fortune to have my stones set where I go. It''s so hard to find a decent benchman.

That sucks. I''m glad you can get your money back though.

So sorry that that happened. I hope you can find a good benchperson to work on your jewelry.

Oh no! That sucks! I''m so sorry.

Oh no sweet Marcy, I am so sorry that happened to you. I wouldn''t go back to them either.

It sounded like you found the perfect stone too.

Love, Linda

How did they do that? Tsavorites has no cleavage and are pretty hard.

Probably treated it like a diamond because most jewellers aren''t used to dealing with gemstones.

That''s unfortunate that so many jewelers treat gems like diamonds, and Harriet does make a good point. My jeweler always asks what kind of stone it is when they set it, and they make a notation if it''s soft. They did a decent job setting my demantoid for example. It''s good to use a jeweler that deals a lot with colored gems (other than sapphires, rubies).

Thanks Lori, Btrflygrl, Michelle, Innerkitten, Cushioncutnut, Megs, Linda, Icekid and Lisa.

Chrono, I agree I am sure the jeweler is not experienced mounting gemstones.

Tourmaline Lover, a good benchman is worth every penny. There is a guy downtown here that does a great job and is pretty inexpensive. His hours are inconvenient but I’ll just have to take things down there during my lunch.

Harriet, my guess is she was trying to bend down the prongs because the head they were going to use had to be modified.

I went out today once the mall opened. The manager who sold me the tsavorite didn’t know it happened but refunded my money no problem. She offered to order in a like stone but I said no.My tsavorite is out there but I am back on my emerald cut diamond search now.I already wrote JA about some possible candidates.

That really stinks about your stone. Hopefully you can find even better stone now! Happy hunting!

Thanks Craving Diamonds. I enjoy the search for a new gemstone or diamond.

I''m sorry about the stone. But at least it wasn''t one of yours and you got all of your money back!

Good luck in your hunting.

It''s good that there was no hassle in getting a refund. I look forward to reading about your EC search with JA; step cuts are one of my favourites. My e-ring is an EC.

marcy- sometimes I think the search is the best part! So jealous of your EC search- I just adore step cuts. Enjoy!!

Thanks Stone Hunter. It was mine for about 24 hours. It was a pretty tsavorite but oh well I got my money back.

Chrono, I am having fun looking for an EC and picked JA because their prices are good. It is just a RHR so I am trying to keep it modestly priced. What carat weight is your e-ring? I know I have seen pictures of it before. I am very interested in a .50 D V2S they list as ideal cut.

Icekid, I would agree with you - the search is a lot of fun. It''s kind of a let down after I buy something. It''s like I get tired of it and start thinking of my next project.

It''s a 0.76ct F VS1. I couldn''t find anything with lower clarity since I wanted something well cut. What are the cut stats on your JA EC?
