We have been in the diamond industry family owned and operated for over 50 years now. We remember how you had to go to 47th street to sell a stone before there was an internet. Today things have changed and there are many great places and opportunities to sell your jewelry both online and offline. Below is a compiled list in no particular order for the top 10 ways to sell a diamond:

1.eBay - When this Bay area listing site came out it was the best way to purchase auction items online at a discounted price. Now fast forward 18 years since the site has taken prominence and you can list your jewelry pieces for the whole world to see. The biggest drawback however is that their fees for listing, selling, and paypal take a big chunk out of your total net profit.

2. Craigslist - For those of you who need money right away and want somebody to come over and purchase your jewelry you can count on Craigslist. The downside of doing this is that you will get about 5 cents on the dollar if not less but if you need money now you can count on this solution.

3. Estate Sales - If your ring is big enough then an auction house like Christies and Sotheby's handle sales of fine estate jewelry and stamped pieces. If you have a ring that is over 3 carats and or is internally flawless then this creates a great opportunity. If you have a single piece or two then you will have to check in with your local representative and see what type of fees you will incur as it varies by location and date.

4. 47th Street NYC - 47th Street is the most prolific diamond area in the world. You will see more jewelrs vying for your business to purchase and or sell you a diamond there then anywhere else in the world. There are lots of famous roots that have come out of here such as Frederico Kaplan, Circa Jewels, Andrew & Peter Fabrikant, and many others. Beware of possible scams here where you can receive fake diamonds as noted in many publications

5. Friends With Money - There is nothing like having a good friend who has enough cash who may want a diamond for his/her wife/husband or girlfriend/boyfriend. These friends sometimes can offer you more cash and help you out when times are tough for you and not for them. You never know unless you ask.

6. PawnShops - Known as the original way to "hock" your old wares and to sell your stuff. You can get cash for a setting and loose stone or you can get a loan against your diamond. Either way this will pay about the same as craigslist or eBay.

7. Online - There are a ton of online sites that allow you to list your old gems for sale. Whether its eBay, Amazon, or BlueNile.

8. Mail Order - If you haven't looked to sell a diamond online then you have not heard of GGC & Diamonds a mail order way to sell your diamonds and jewelry. By doing this you get paid more then the store fronts who have to cover rent and electricity and best of all it's not embarrassing to go into a store in a small town where you have to worry about being the gossip of being a recent divorcee.

9. Consignment Shop - Not the obvious way but it still works. You only pay a fee if it sells and if you are not in a rush then this is not a bad way to sell diamonds.

10. Local Jewelry Store - Most of these stores like Zales and Jared will not buy back your jewelry because they know how much they overcharged you for it in the first place. Some of them may have a small buyback program but this will result in the smallest payout by far.

We hope that this list is helpful and not exhaustive. There are only so many ways to receive cash for old diamonds and jewelry. Please leave your feedback and experiences selling jewelry below.

We cannot evaluate the price of a diamond without knowing about the cut and shape; this information is obligatory I think..

I wouldn't sell jewelry using craigslist. Who wants to meet a stranger?
