the corners of the princess cut setting with diamond studs

Hi all

You have probably mentioned this topic before but I couldn''t find anything when I did my search.

Whilst viewing various princess cut diamond stud settings I noticed the difference with the various settings encasing the stone at the top. The 4 prongs are either prong like or the corners of the stone are encased in the shape of an L. Naturally there is more gold on each corner for the L like shape. I''m probably not explaining this very well but with the first example more of the corners of the stone are shown whereas the other example covers the corners protecting them (I guess). Can anyone please tell me the best type of setting or is it personal taste as to appearance? Also, can a white gold setting or platinum be coated with yellow gold instead of completely changing the setting? I''ve noticed quite a few places only sell white gold or platinum.

I believe the prong type you are describing is commonly referred to as a "V cap" or "V prong"?

With stud earrings, I''m assuming that the concerns of damage to the corners is mainly during setting and not during wear like with a ring. Still, without knowing better, if it was me, I''m thinking a "V cap" prong would be a better option just in terms of being paranoid about the corners on Princess stone and wanting to protect them as much as possible, regardless of the application, but that''s just me and I could be wrong.

Not sure about your color plating question, but I''m sure there are plenty of experts on the board that can advise you on that.

Do you mean chevron type prongs which are shown in this pic?

It seems some experts recommend Princess cuts to be set with these prongs, to help protect the vulnerable corners, which may chip on occasion if exposed. Regarding a yellow gold setting, I was told that whatever can be made in white gold can also be done in yellow as a rule of thumb, so it may be best to ask about having your setting made this way, it shouldn''t be a problem.

Exactly what I meant with the corners Lorelei. Mind you these corners have been cleverly done as they have still managed to show as much of the stone as possible whereas the ones I''ve seen cover more of the stone.

I probably didn''t explain very well but I was going to keep the same setting and have it coated yellow gold if it''s possible?? I didn''t really want the stones removed from the setting in case of damage but I guess this can''t be avoided.
