Sorry to hear about the ''cumberbund'' but its best that you realize its not exactly what you want.

One of my favorite parts of the OMC is that when there is a medium, non elongated culet, coupled with at least the pair of opposing main facets of equal size, you can get the repeating cross-pattern of the pavilion to be displayed on the crown facets (the kites especially)! To me its like looking at a kaleidoscope... the dynamic nature of the patterning is rather mesmerizing and unique. While this is hard to demonstrate on a picture, if you look at this gem advisor model of an OMC, and play with it, you can observe the pattern repeat readily... just keep your eye out for the culet reflection in the kites and you will see what I mean!

Good luck with your continued search, I can''t wait to see the next contender :)
I took it to a jeweler tonight and mine was the best in the store, easily. They didn''t have any ideal cuts but there''s no such thing as an ideal cushion - right? haha... they had an 80something facet round there that came real close... and I''m wondering if bigger stones just have slower scintinllation because there is farther to go from facet to facet... because I think that''s part of what I''m seeing... I mean the pinfire is there, but the broader flashes or those medium flashes are fewer between... I think I''m going to post that in another thread and try to get some bigshots to answer! lol

C, I am sorry you are having a hard time. While the stone looks very beautiful to my untrained eye, it sort of sounds like your gut is telling you that something is wrong, and you only feel better when you look at it (get a sense of reassurance that maybe your gut is wrong). Couple of questions - 1. if an appraiser told you it was not worth what you paid (hence giving you a reason to return it) would you feel like a big weight was lifted from your shoulders? (in other words if someone sort of made the decision for you) 2. if someone else purchased the stone would you feel sick?

LOL don''t mind me, I''m all over the place... the stone is just so *weird*! It''s definitely one of a kind! people around the world with radiants and ovals have gotten used to their bow ties... why can''t I get used to my cumberbund? Heck, in certain lights it''s my *favorite* part! lol It''s the one that really throws the huge rainbows! I think part of my mind would be happier with the fourway symmetry of a square or a round... I''m really getting that... but the other part of my head really doesn''t like squares and rounds and wants a long stone... so back and forth I go... One minute I think wow this is the most unusual and gorgeous stone I''ve ever seen in my life! And the next I''m like but it would be easier on the ocd part of my mind if the symmetry went 4 ways LOL

I *definitely* know what you mean about the OCD about symmetry, that is why I chose Iceberg over MtDew... my eye is just more drawn to regular, predictable patterns. Thankfully my mom is more concerned with size and sparkle

I also have a strong affinity for art deco type designs, clean lines, architectural themes which also directed me in one direction vs another.

So do you think you will be moving a less rectangular OMC?

don''t ask me now scott, right now I like it @@ ROFL it just has so much going on... this ring actually would look very smart in an art deco design now that you mention it... it is very long and angular like many art deco pieces... unfortunately i''m more fond of victorian and edwardian styles LOL And you know it''s funny but its art deco nature is what I don''t like about it, I never quite could place it but that''s exactly it! sorry! hehehe It is very tailored though... I just don''t think it will go with scrollwork lol

Prediction, from my past experience LOL: You''ll love the stone just before it has to be returned.

Don''t follow my pattern of analyzing each stone to the point of ending up with no stone at all. I''m like you in a way because I over-analyzed diamonds to death. I learned after much prompting from the PS''ers that your eyes tell the whole story. If it speaks to you, forget the numbers.

You have a beautiful sparkly stone there....enjoy!!!

The kids are in school next week so I''m going to trek down and look at diamonds, hopefully find some good ones. It seems so hard to find diamonds. I saw a 2 carat I1 yesterday... it was a J and looked lighter than my J because there was so much coal in it turning it grey LOL

Yes, I do analyze quite a bit but I''m not enjoying it all that much and really would like to move on and have a ring, so that is fueling this quite a bit. Don''t get me wrong, it is fun to learn and research, but I''ve wanted this ring for 15 years and I want it now LOL I could wait for the perfect stone if I knew it was out there - like knowing I can afford the perfect 3 carat and just having to wait around until it shows up... but for me so many qualities I want are actually contradictory. I can''t have 8 even thick mains AND tons of pinfire... I can''t have square symmetry on the inside and a long silhouette on the outside... I can''t have the perfection of a round in the chaos of a cushion. So there are no clear ideas of what exactly is perfect for me and waiting around for it could be fruitless as my tastes change. And I don''t enjoy searching for the perfect stone for the sake of pursuit. I want the prize!!

Oh, and if I fall in love with a stone right before it has to be returned? I won''t return it ;)

forgot to answer this before... I think that as long ones go this is it. The antique guy here who had surgery is back so hopefully I''ll get to see some stones like yours this week... I don''t know if he has anything in the 2-3 carat range though or what his prices are... some antique dealers are reasonable and others are insanely overpriced!! I''m also planning on looking at some large ideal rounds and some small ideal rounds to get a better grasp of that scint/size thing because my stone really is amazing and if my disappointment in it is because it is so big, then I need to either get a few smaller stones or get over it! lol
