Tension settings...what's up with the name?

It crossed my mind today that the term 'tension setting' doesn't make any sense. Tension is a pulling force, attempting to "stretch" the body it is applied to...quite the opposite of the pressure used in a tension set piece of jewelry. I haven't been able to find out why this name is used, as it's pretty inaccurate as I see it. Anyone have any insight?

It's a misnomer if you only look at it from the perspective of the diamond being held by the metal - but because the metal is manufactured to be spring loaded, by placing the diamond in the setting you put the metal under tension (the diamond is pulling the metal ends apart).

Hope this helps
