hi all, I came across this tension-like but is actually channel setting ring today. here''s the like to the website http://www.jamesallen.com/engagement_rings/classic_solitaire_settings.asp?module=setting&cid=57&item=174&name=1011

my biggest concern is that if the diamond will fall out easily and I have also heard some opinions that the diamond in tension setting has the tendency to get loose. But I really like the slick looking of the ring. Does anybody know about this kind of channel setting? Is it safer as in giving the ring more security? Please help!!

attached photo is another ring I also like very much but unsure the name for it. If anyone knows the name for this particular ring, I''d appreciate the help. thanks.

The pic you posted is mostly known as a halo ring. You can check out some very pretty ones at www.whiteflash.com I don't know a lot about tension settings. Haven't had much experience with them. There are many here who love them. I think James Allen is a great vendor and could answer your questions, and hopefully others with tension settings can chime in as well. Good luck and welcome to PS

Well, I don''t know about this - if stones fall out of tension settings. Some say that, but then, there is more rumor than hard info about jewelry anyway. The styles are definitely unusual and somewhat of a technical challenge - most jewelers would not make tension settings from precious metals because of some special treatment the metal has to go through. Maybe some unsafe rings were made and wrecked the reputation of all tension settings - what do I know? Also, some styles of tension rings seen too adventurous for 24/7 wear - leaving allot of girdle exposed.

The channel set rings shouldn''t have to deal with the first issue (special metallurgy) but may still have design flaws, and with the more futuristic styles, you never know. The one from James Allen looks rater conservative, and safe...

Btw. The first link in your initial post doesn''t work for me. I guessed you were talking about this ring:

You may also want to check David Keeling''s online gallery for a few tension-like designs.

And at least for an idea if ordering in Canada is not an option... Ron Davidson''s.

thank you for your generous and helpful input!!

I think I''ve decided to go with the halo ring to be more on the safe side but I''m really new to this ring terminology stuff. How do I describe to the jeweler that I want the "little space" between the halo and center stone? I also see lots discussion here about bezel or prong for halo setting. Can any of you tell from the picture if this is a bezel or prong? Thanks bunch!! sorry I''m really learning slowly about rings.

Hi TJGreen!!

Your pic is a halo with prongs. Can you bring in that photo to your jeweler to show him/her exactly what you want?

Also, www.whiteflash.com has both a bezel halo and a prong halo for more pics.

The center stone in the picture is prong set and the spec you refer to is sometimes called ''airline'' but I don''t thin that is universal language.

The best bet would be to show them a picture (IMO) and point out what you like about the setting and what should be changed. Having a few views of the reference ring should help - the face-up view does not tell the whole story about a 3D object.

Now, the ring in the picture doesn''t seem to have any space left between the centre stone and halo (and this is more common for bezel set than prong set stones anyway). Is this closer to what you had in mind?

Thanks again! You guys are so awesome!! Im so glad that I found this website.

I have one question about the halo. I''ve seen many of them that has a bulky look to the rim. The one in the picture I posted seems like the halo is made of little diamonds with progs but without the bulky rim look. What is the correct term to use to describe?

Not clear what that is...

The picture below is a 'sampler' of pave styles and I have a hard time calling anything about them 'bulky': which is the good one for you?

I am not sure how to call each and every, and there may be no generally accepted names - you could also show the sample (or any other suitable).

Hope this helps...

Some points of your description - the ''airline'' on a prong setting (rare thing), fine pave... reminded me of a couple of rings:

Both were done HERE for Pricescopers and are listed on this thread.

I really like the 2nd ring down from the top for the pave style that you posted.

Do you also happen to have the pictures of side views for that ring?
