Hi!

I have been in the market for a tennis necklace for a couple months and I found one from a jeweler I have previously purchased from. It is already made, exactly what I wanted and he is offering a pretty good deal since I am a return customer, the only problem is it's longer than I wanted. It is 18.25" and I was shopping for a 16". I could have my local jeweler make it shorter or perhaps take the extra 2" and turn that into an extender incase I ever want to wear it longer. However, is that just wasting money on diamonds I am not using? I just don't see myself wanting to wear an 18" very often, if at all but I guess I cannot be sure until I have it. Does anyone have any opinions on length of tennis necklaces? Alternatively I can wait till he has a 16" available he just didn't know when that would be or if it will be exactly what I want. If I had him custom make one it voids a return policy and he is not local to me so I wanted to avoid that route. If I got a 16" (same carats as an 18") I suppose the 16" diamonds would look slightly bigger but I am guessing the size difference would be very minimal? Any advice would be appreciated! I am a little paralyzed by this decision! Thank you in advance.

Why don't you buy it and try the 18" length?

Then, if you love it, have a local jeweler shorten it for you.

I prefer 17-18" but that's just my preference.

Thank you! I would have totally pulled the trigger already and tried it but I have to pay shipping back with insurance if I need to return and will do that obviously if need be but shipping with insurance for this piece is so expensive so trying to think this all through

Have tried on those different lengths with CZs? You could order them of Amazon and see how you like them.

Yes I did! I preferred the 16" which is why I kind of zeroed in on that size but this one came available...

Gosh, when it comes to these substantial purchases, I always think it's better to buy once and well. Buying something that sort of fits the bill seems doesn't seem like the best option.

Instead of an extender, would there be any way to rework the remaining stones into earrings? or a 5-stone ring? or bracelet?

Totally agree with you! Which is why I’ve held off but it’s a good deal and it seems so easy to shorten it so I’ve just been putting off the decision. See, I’m so torn I’m arguing with myself lol
I just texted the jeweler and he said waiting for a 16” with hopefully similar specs would only save me a couple hundred dollars. I thought the difference would be much higher, not sure why it’s only a couple hundred dollars. Would that affect your decision at all?
Regarding using the diamonds for something else, great idea but I am not really in the market for anything right now.

Also, I’m sure he would be giving me a good deal on the 16” when he has one available but just no clue as to when that would be!

I'll admit to be being a slight cynic. Would it really only be a couple of hundred dollars or are they trying to make the sale now? I also admit that I wonder if you can leverage this to your advantage and get them to shave off a couple of hundred if you buy *now.*

Here's the thing, there's no "right" answer. On one hand, it really sounds like this necklace fits most specs. On the other hand, you could wait. Or perhaps, you and your jeweler could meet in the middle and make each other happy?

And yes - the return shipping would cost you a little, but in purchases like this, we know it takes a little skin on our parts, too. That is, we're not buying a potted plant and seeing it if matches our dining room. I'd be ok with shelling out a little and trying the necklace on, but that's just me.

There's supposed to be joy in the journey, so I hope this is all tickling you and friskying up your fancy ... if not, hold tight and wait. (I think I gave you an extensive non-answer. Apologies!)

Haha well thank you! Like you said there are no right (or wrong) answers, I guess I was just hoping for some opinions so I really appreciate yours!

I checked out his website where he lists some of his pieces for sale and he was truthful, looks like a 16" did sell, at some point, for close to the 18" price. I guess I just need to decide if I just want the 16" or if I want the flexibility of having an extender made in which case 18" would be better. If the 18" wasn't in the picture I am not sure I would even have thought of an extension piece, maybe that should tell me something! Ahh, these jewelry decisions are hard, its exciting and thankful to be making this decision but for someone SO indecisive I struggle big time!! Thanks again! :)

@kel12345 about how much is shipping with insurance? Have you shopped with this jeweler before? When I was shopping for necklaces, I noticed that there was a lot of variation in cut/ sparkle.

Yes! I have, although nothing this expensive, but he comes highly recommended in a lot of different forums/Yelp etc. Return shipping from what I can estimate online is around $120.
