Hi All,

In addition to my other post searching for an engagement ring, I was also thinking of getting my SO a gift in the meantime since the engagement is probably a ways away.

I was thinking about a nice tennis bracelet. Something that looked substantial, not small. What CTW should I look for and also what sort of setting?

Where's a good place to buy from?

I am such a novice...I just need the basics in terms of what cut, clarity, color is good for a bracelet.

I'd personally want a piece that was high quality and that I would be happy with for a lifetime. So I would recommend WhiteFlash:

I have a tennis bracelet that was bought several years ago and it is beautiful, but honestly, after being educated about diamond cut, I wish all my jewelry had excellent/ideal cut stones!

I love the diamonds by the yard bracelets for more casual wear:

OK, so I should buy the 6 ctw one then? Also, what setting is best...xprong or the other?

i like the 3 prong- but thats just me. it's really personal preference.

Mine has stones closest in size to the 5 ctw although mine has a few less stones. I think you should buy whichever best fits your budget. However, I should ask, what size diamond are you planning for the e-ring? Because I like balance in the pieces of a diamond jewelry collection.

ring will be between 3 and 4 carats

In that case, the 6 carat one would be perfect!

I prefer diamond bangles to tennis bracelets. http://www.briangavindiamonds.com/diamond-bracelets/shared-prong-bangle-14k-white-gold-5418w14 High quality. Diamonds on the top. They make them in different carat weights. And I can tell you from experience that the 4 carat version of this bangle is KNOCKOUT and comfortable. I

Looks like 3 carats might be enough! (I still want the 4 carat version though :$$): ) Since they are half eternity (no point in diamonds all around) you get a HUGE amount of bling where it counts, the oval shape keeps the bangle from twisting and keeps the diamond where they are supposed to be.

I'll be honest, last time I tried on tennis bracelets for a 'substantial' look I was trying on 10 carat bracelets... 12 carat ones in old cuts. I'd go for the bangle instead because you get MUCH larger stones across the top on your hand, where you want them and a REALLY substantial look for a lot less.

Also Brian Gavin is a fabulous vendor (you can do a search for all their wonderful reviews) and you can't get higher quality than their signature line of diamonds and their setting work is beautiful.

great gift!!!

That is a beautiful bracelet, but I prefer the tennis bracelet because of the flexibility. I have had bangles in the past and the plain metal part can easily be dented. Plus I like the diamonds all the way around on a traditional tennis bracelet. I can see the bangle in lower carat weights, but if he can do a 6 carat one, I'd go with the tennis bracelet and not a bangle. 1 or 2 carats makes more sense in the bangle.

Would there be a big difference between the 6 carat one and the 7.2 carats? Trying to figure out which gives the most bang for the buck.

Okay, the 6 ct. 3 prong bracelet has 41 stones so they are each 14.6 points each.

The 7 ct. x-prong has 48 stones at 15 points each. The stones look closer together since there are more of them. I personally would choose this one.

OK, 7.2 x-prong seems to be the best then...unless someone has another suggestion besides White Flash? I normally like to compare others to find the best deal...

The only other vendor I know who uses top quality stones in a bracelet is Brian Gavin and they have a 3 prong bracelet but they do not list their prices for any but the 2 ct. You'd have to call to get prices on 6-7 ct. They have the 3 prong 2 carat priced the same as WF. However, some of their prices are higher because I was recently shopping for diamond earrings and BG was higher for the same thing. Plus I like the x-prong setting better since the diamonds are closer together.

That was my next question...xprong vs. 3 prong. Both seem to look nice. I don't want it to look busy at all...let the diamonds just sort of float out there with as little metal as possible.

ManhattanSpin I know you are asking about tennis bracelets but does she have diamond stud earrings already?

The stones are closer together in the x-prong setting, and I think that will look best...a line of diamonds will be what you mainly see.

I agree with slg that diamond studs are a staple item, and you need to save one big gift for a wedding gift for her! If she doesn't have them already, you'll probably need to go with at least a carat in each ear due to the ring stone size. :))

First, I wouldn't be okay with 3 prongs. One of those snags a sweater and comes lose you lose a stone immediately. I'd prefer 4 prongs or better yet, bezels.

You can call BGD and ask them to beat the WF price and see what they say. If they agree, great. If they don't... well, there you go.

I want to emphasize slg's point. I wouldn't buy a tennis bracelet for a woman with pierced ears who doesn't own a nice set of diamond studs. In every poll we've ever done on here about the 'basics' of a jewelry wardrobe earrings come WAY before bracelets.

So if your lady doesn't have studs, I highly suggest you reconsider the bracelet, unless she's specifically asked for one.

She has studs already, about 1.5ct each.

That is the perfect size to go with her future e-ring!

And I agree with Gypsy that the 4 prongs of the x-prong setting are much safer than 3 prongs, aside from the fact that the stones are closer together. I would order the x-prong for myself for both of those reasons. (My current 4 ct. bracelet is 4 prong as well.)

I don't see tennis bracelets around as much as I used to, but I still love them. Mine is in a half-bezel setting; it never snags on anything.
