Any thoughts on this? Do you know where can I get this if I bought the losse diamond from WF or BN?

Thanks!

Do you mean purchasing an inexpensive solitaire setting until your SO picks out a permanent setting? You can get those at BN or WF

I will get the rock for proposal, but for the setting I want to shop it with my girlfriend together so she can pick whatever she wants..

But here is a problem.... how can I pospose w/o a setting? =) I don''t want to spend few hundreds on a "temporary" setting as we will find a better (permanent) one later anyway. Does anyone have the same issue? What will you do?

Then get a basic Stuller 4 or 6 prong setting. Any jeweller (local or internet like WF, GOG, BN, etc) carries them. It shouldn''t cost more than $100 to $200.

how easy is it to change a setting? will most store do it for free if i got the setting over there? and once the rock is on the setting, is it still ok for appraisal?

Pretty easy job but not for free. It will cost anywhere from $50 to $150 depending upon the size of the stone, shape and store itself. Appraisal is best done unmounted, then mounted (for insurance purposes as a whole ring).

Hi kelvin, you could also just propose with the diamond alone in a pretty presentation box, then as you said shop for the setting together. This is actually a pretty common practice and I know most girls would be delighted with the gesture alone and being able to choose their own dream setting.
Pls do let us know what you decide!

Do you have any idea what type of setting she wants? Do you think she would pick out a setting quickly because she knows exactly what she wants or would take months because she loves everything but hasn''t tried anything on?

If you are going to get a setting right after the proposal, I wouldn''t spend money ($250+) on a very temp setting and then a resetting fee. Also, understand that if you buy the diamond alone, you will need to pay to ship it back.

If you think the search may take a few months, then a temp setting might be a good idea. I had a temp setting from November (proposal) until March (sent my ring to Maytal Hannah for the permanent setting, so until May I have no setting). We lucked out and didn''t have to pay for the setting, but had we, I didn''t want to spend over $250 and even that seemed like such a waste for us.

There are those who have proposed without the diamond, so that is an option as well.

I don''t think she will pick the setting immediately.. She is a person who love to shop around =)

I just talked to BN, they have something called spring ring just for presentation purpose (free). They don''t recommed to wear it as the diamond might fall. But it''s totally fine for me... On the other hand, WF doesn''t offer this..

Oh.. you can refer to my other post regarding the rock:

I guess I will not spend extra $$ to get the temporary setting, and as arjunajane suggested, I can get a fancy presentation box and make it looks nice.. Also, since I am planning to buy the rock online, I want to take it for a full appraisal anyway...

I will let you all know my decision for sure =)

Well, don''t let a spring ring sway you... it''s nice to "see" the diamond on the finger, but it''s essentially a round pair of tweezers.

Choose the best diamond. If you post the ones you are considering, the experts can help you decide.

Sure definitely... the spring ring will not be a factor on the diamond purchase =)

Hello! I hope this helps, but my fiance had gotten our loose diamond from blue nile and fortunately, the diamond came in a tension clamp to hold up the diamond in the box. You can propose with the loose diamond in the tension clamp and forgo buying a temporary setting to save some $$ since you already know you want her to pick out the setting. It''s a great alternative! Good luck.

Actually, I bet if you asked them, WhiteFlash would give you a spring ring. Most jewelers have them, and I think they cost in the neighborhood of $5. Just make sure she doesn''t actually try to wear the spring ring! You wouldn''t want to lose the diamond.

If u don''t think she will pick something quickly I would buy something as cheap as possible, but I would have something she could wear! I would hate to a wonderful diamond that I could wear. It would make me chose a mount in a hurry just so I could wear the diamond. And it sounds like she will really enjoy shopping for a mounting if she isn''t in a rush.

Good Luck

If you are not totally strapped for cash and compromising on the stone, I would spring the extra $300 for a temporary setting. When you present her with that incredible sparkly diamond she is going to want to wear it RIGHT NOW and show it off to friends and family, even if it''s not in her ''forever'' setting. It just won''t be the same to show people a diamond in a box IMHO.

Also, that way she may not be feeling rushed into picking a setting just so she can wear the ring, she can take all the time in the world to find her dream setting.

Also, depending where you live, etc, you may not be able to get a loose stone insured (I couldn''t anywhere in Australia). Once a stone is set here, it''s insured and is covered for resetting too, whereas a loose stone will not be covered to be set. It needs to be set initially where you bought the stone, and then the cover starts. Hope that makes sense, I am warbling a little this morning, just woke up!
