Tell me about Fiji.....

Winter has landed in my part of the US and I''m on the hunt for my 2008 vacation. My main criteria are warm, tropical waters with a smaller hotel...preferably private cottages or bungalos. I also try to be very budget friendly. I don''t need 5 star accomodations. I ran across this option in Fiji:

Has anyone ever heard of it? What should I know about Fiji? When is the best time to go? What are the beaches/water like compared to the Caribbean? Any government/civil unrest that would concern a tourist?

I''d gladly take other suggestions of places to go.
