Talk to me about (antique) Emerald cuts

I really like the color of this one as you know my sweet spot is from L-P range. The ring I want to set this bad boy into requires it be a slight yellow/ ivory going on. However, this is just a bit to square for me. Also, way out of my price range even with my trade in.

Disappointed that there's not a single side view. :(sad

This diamond looks almost identical to mine, except it's on steroids, lol! Honestly in a side by side the facet pattern and shape is extremely close. Mine is also a K, but faces up much whiter than the DBL pics.

Edited to add: the dbl has a smaller table and a 70% depth. Mine is 63.3 depth and 65 table, however the cutting pattern and length to width is very similar.

This is exactly why I want to see the profile view - to admire how puffy and pillowy it is.

Interesting that most of the stones posted/linked are so shallow -- under 60% depth.

Maybe it's just me but although I love the wide shoulders, the pattern doesn't look so hot to me. I think I'm the only one though...

I like the large corners and the square-ish shapes -- that says "vintage" or "antique" EC to me -- but I have to say that I see a lot of windowing in the patterns -- you can see right through some parts of those stones (check for the background color or skin showing through the facets). The windows do create a sharp contrast pattern, but my suspicion is those dark parts of the pattern will stay dark and never light up.

Pillowy ECs need their own category, IMHO

I have long coveted an antique emerald, but I can't get it without giving up one of my rings and I can't bear to part with either, so I'll just have to live vicariously through you Sarah!! Can you get this ring on your finger in time for Vegas??? :naughty: ;)

Nope not even close. First I have to decide if I'm willing to part with my MRB which today I'm leaning towards getting rid of it. I think antique cuts in the lower colors call to me.

Now for the setting I'm guessing it will cost a pretty penny so even if I buy the diamond it will be well into next year before I have budget to set it. I know you have seen this setting before but I just can't get it out of my head. I want VC or SK to recreate it with some tweaking. DH is fine with me having this be my big project for 2014.

That is gorgeous, Sarah! I am in complete agreement that a halo can really enhance the lower color stones! I'd love to have either and EC or a cushion to do something similar!

What about thoughts on this one from James Allen. When I'm looking at the cert what are the indicators I should be looking for. I believe I read somewhere the table for step cuts should be under 70% with depth being between 62-68%. Is that correct?

Just to note I'm not looking at this exact diamond but for educational purposes I picked it out.

68 is still too big of a table for me. My asscher has something like a 58 table, and I think the crowns are much more beautiful when the tables are smaller. I haven't spent a lot of time looking at EC's, but I'd go for a smaller table closer to the low end of the 60's if it were me.

Keep the table closer to 60 to 65%. Not a guarantee but I prefer this look.

DS and Chrono -Thank you for your help. I don't want to jump into anything just yet but it helps to know that if I'm going to take the plunge I'm at least trying to educate myself and get the best possible EC I can. I know I'm limited myself by color and more of an antique look but those appeal to me the most. I have a feeling if I start down this road it is going to be a long one.

That's okay. And informed long road will yield something you are happy to keep. It's when we rush we make the greatest mistakes.
