I recently ordered a custom tacori setting from a local
jeweler in the san francisco bay area who will remain nameless for now as the issue is not settled. The ring was ordered in a size 4 plus. The ring came in after 4 weeks and looks great. When I double checked the size at the store though, it measured at a size 4. It seems my jeweler made a mistake and may have ordered a size 4. I had my girlfriend''s finger sized at more than a few jewelers to confirm her size before I actually got around to placing the order so I know she is definitely a 4 plus. Instead of admitting the mistake though, the jeweler offered to polish out the inside of the shank to create more room and turn the ring into a size 4 plus. This sounded bogus to me so I called around some other local jewelers that I considered buying from previously. They all said the same thing... Get the right size. Polishing out the shank removes platinum and thins it out. I also do not think having it cut and resized with an additional piece of metal is a good alternative since the mistake was not mine. Can anyone give me any advice on what other options I may have? So far from what I hear, the only thing acceptable would be to have the ring made again. I have only paid a deposit which I hope I can get back if they don''t find an option that suits me. Thanks in advance for any help.

I seem to remember that Tacori wants all work to be done by them, otherwise the guarentee does not hold. So one way or another, you're almost certainly going to be sending it back to them for reworking or remaking. What you really want is for your jeweler to pay for it if s/he made a mistake, right? Perhaps s/he has documentation of the order s/he made to Tacori?

Out of curiousity, what is a 4+, anyway?

I suggest you haqve the ring sized to 4+ by having it cut and altered properly. This should be done for no charge by your jeweler. DO NOT agree to thinning out a brand new ring that was mis-ordered by them, if such is the case. Take a brand new replacement or have it correctly sized.

The likely scenario will be they will agree. Then they will return it to Tacori or to their trade shop for re-sizing. Be very insistent on not getting it reamed out if you don't want that to occur. Make sure you have a WRITTEN agreement with a principal of the store, not a sales clerk.....

If you feel you MUST take the ring as-is and have simply no one to trust to have it sized properly, I would imagine there are people here who could recommend someone.... If not, we could accomplish this on nearly any piece, but probably there is another place far more logical for you.

Have the jeweler send the ring back to Tacori. As Chialea said, Tacori requires to do any work or the warranty is void. And, you definitely want to avoid any structural issues that might occur if a less than competent smith works on the ring.

A 4+ is just over size 4. Kinda like 4 and 1/8, but not as big as 4.25

Hi again. Thanks for the replies that have come in. I will definitely not accept the thinning out of the ring by polishing based on the replies and my talks with jewelers. But I am also concerned about the cutting. The ring has a crescent moon pattern all the way around. It has diamonds only about half way. I have attached a picture of what the design was based on. The bottom half is engravings and filigree but still maintains the crescent moons. If a cut is made, then won't the pattern be broken? I guess the engravings can be redone but will the crescent where the cut is made look off?

One jeweler suggested "stretching" the ring but others say that the idea is not good for rings with details like a tacori.

I do have my receipt that specifies the correct size I ordered. The jeweler for some reason has avoided showing me a copy of any work order tacori may have sent them. They are not giving me any idea of where the error occurred.

So I took a look at ring sizing and a 4 plus sits between a 4 and 4.25. It is actually exactly a european size 47 or japanese size 7 exactly. This seems such a small amount of difference to me. But everywhere my girlfriend got sized at she could tell the difference between the sizes.

This would be a nnightmare to resize! This is why some eternity rings have a small plain band segment in the back...

Definitely the best way is to get it back to Tacory. it is likely they will just replace/remake it. No way I (maybe someone more professional though, that I am not) could tell wether the settign will endure inside carving or stretching well - it depends on how thick the band is and so on... The model looks rather fragile to me as is: likely a good example why most jewelers will just say "we can resize nearly everything", just to make sure

You should absolutely insist that the ring be replaced by one that is the size you ordered. If you're not dealing with the owner of the store now, I suggest he/she be the next person you talk to. If you are dealing with the store owner ... well, then it comes down to whether you can afford to walk away and take the time/effort to get your deposit and downpayment back. Given that your receipt clearly shows that a 4+ was ordered, it doesn't seem that the store has much ground to stand on if they don't get the right ring.

Even though there isn't a large absolute difference in size between the 4 and 4+, at that size ring, the percentage difference is still significant, so it's not surprising that your GF could feel it.

One thing I would point out, though, is that since she's unused to wearing a ring on "THAT" finger, the right size ring may feel a little tight. I had my finger sized at about 5 different places to convince myself that it was the right size; if the store ABSOLUTELY refuses to get the right size ring, and if you can't afford to have them holding on to your money while you take steps to get it back -- your GF might get used to the size 4.
