Ok pricescope dwelers - after much reading, I am reaching out to you advice here in the last hours before I purchase.
I will be purchasing a loose diamond from Blue Nile tonight because I need the diamond in asap. Here is my story:

I am putting this loose stone into a Tacori 6-prong plat. setting. The local jewlery store will take the measurements of the stone I purchase, call Tacori and Tacori will then make the setting to fit the half carat/round cut diamond I am purchasing. The ring is made to normally fit .75 carat diamonds and higher. Even though a new ring/6-prong crown is being made, I am concerned.

My question- with the 6-prong setting (cathedral set - antique style) - I do not want the setting to overwhelm the .50 carat round cut. I believe that with the correct table, crown and girdle, a .50 carat will look perfect. What %''s should I look for?

I have been over the tutorials but I can''t seem to nail down what would be best in my situation. Thanks for the help! If you need more info, let me know!

honestly i would not put a .50c stone in a 6 prong setting, esp depending on the tacori setting...some of them are so overwhelming to even larger stones. how big are the prongs? some of tacori''s settings have huge prongs. if it''s a super simple tacori then maybe but even then i don''t love 6 prongs on stones under 1ctw...just my own personal thing.

Can you post a pic of the setting?? I agree with Mara in that a .50 may be overwhelmed by a 6 prong Tacori setting. You want the stone to be the star and I feel it may get lost in this kind of setting. Have to see a pic to be sure.

It is a very dainty ring - the lucky lady has small fingers. The prongs do very little wrapping over the diamond.
I am less concerned with the prongs since Tacori will be making a ring to fit my stone exactly. The crown/prongs will be made to fit a .50 carat as perfectly as a full carat. The engraved band tapers as it reaches the solitare setting, thus accentuating the diamond.

Like I mentioned above - the ring is very dainty and tapers off towards the diamond. Any takers for advice on a .50 carat in that setting? The lucky lady loves the engraved/antique style, and this setting feels so perfect for that.

Probably not what you want to hear, but I don''t like the idea of a .50ct in a 6 prong setting either.

Even after viewing the picture - still do not like the idea? Of course my heart is set on this setting, but I am willing to take my heart off for the sake of making it the perfect ring. I''ve just had a hard time finding a ring that is not so ''modern''. She loves the antique/engraved.

When viewing the pic, keep in mind that the pic is of a full carat, and that stone looks huge. I have held the ring in my hand with .50 carats next to, and it the crown and I just did not get the feeling that the ring would overwhelm the stone.

How much can you spend on the diamond?

Will they do it with 4 prongs?

I guess what I am really not crazy about, is that ring of metal surrounding the diamond.

My budget - great question - I am honestly trying to keep my diamond purchase under $1500. As a college student that is attempting to graduate early, hopping from job to odd job to make enough to keep going, I am stretching myself as far as possible. Sometimes you just have to sacrifice. I do not know if they will make it with 4 prongs. That is a question I could have an answer to by tomorrow.

Can''t Tacori use 4 prongs since they will be custom making your ring to fit the stone? By the way when I looked at a Tacori ring, my jeweler said they would send the stone to Tacori and let them set it. I don''t know if this is a good thing or not, but my jeweler said it was.

Asking never hurt. I will ask the jewler tomorrow if Tacori can use 4 instead of 6. Do you believe that using 4 instead of 6 would make a huge difference since .50 carat is all I can afford? If this does not work out, anyone know where I can view similar settings?

I just keep going back to when I held the ring in my hand along with a .50 carat... Thanks for the advice. Much appreciated from this diamond rookie. Any more advice out there?

Thanks for the links diamondseeker. Both are beautiful diamonds in thier signature collection.

I have not looked at the signature collection diamonds simply because of price. So maybe it boils down to this - if I must stay with 6 prongs - go with a .50 carat in the signature collection, or bump up the carat weight and drop to a lesser quality diamond. Just dont know if I or she could tell a difference in .10 carats in the Tacori setting I have chosen.

I haven''t been posting long on PS at all, but have had a passion for gemstones and jewelry of all kinds for many years. I hope you will accept my opinion on the matter.

In my opinion, a 0.5 ctw stone looks perfectly fine in a 6-prong setting. My sister''s ring is approximately that size in 6 prongs, and looks absolutely lovely. If the stone has a lot of life, a simple band will not overshadow the stone; the sparkle and brilliance will be in the forefront, and the 6 prongs do not detract from that, expecially if the prongs are sized properly (proportioned) for a 0.5 carat stone.

I'd rather see you put the money towards the stone and put it in a simple 4 prong setting. Tacori settings are expensive and since you're a college student, I'd put what you can into the stone and spend less on the setting. JMHO

That is a gorgeous setting. Surely they will make the prong tips tiny on a half carat stone so it should be okay either way. However, it would make sense for the store to ask Tacori if that setting is appropriate as is for a half carat stone, or whether it needs to be 4 prongs.

.50ct is a nice size but i too think 6 prongs will just overwhelm it. the diamond is going to look secondary to the setting.

My feelings exactly. I would not spend 1/2 of the money on the diamond and 1/2 on the setting. The lion's share of the money should go toward the diamond, IMO. I think most women would like a bigger diamond, in this case.

She can get a more detailed w-band, if she so chooses.

I didn''t see Kaleigh''s post until after I posted my last one, but of course it is an option to get a simple Tiffany setting and put all your money into the diamond and let her reset it later for an anniversary gift. But by all means, buy from the Signature collection. It would be very sad to put a mediocre or poor quality stone into a Tacori setting.

Kaleigh - this would be the perfect situation - spend big on the stone, less on the ring. However, the lucky lady places a heavier emphasis on having a special ring - a ring that speaks of her style, and ellegance. This IS that ring. In the end - I will be spending more on the ring than the diamond. To some, and I would venture to say MOST - that is absurd. For me and my soon to be fiance - this is what we want. She has not seen this setting so it will be a suprise. But for those of you who have been through the ring hunt - you know what it feel like when you see THE one.

This is THE one.

The retail price on the ring is 1350. The store called Tacori - Tacori agreed to make it for half cart - but the price jumped to 1500. After taxes, ect, I was quoted a little over 1700 for the ring. I will be going in tomorrow to talk them down because I can not and will not pay that much. If they want to retain me as a customer, they will have to come down.

Designers like Tacori do not come down in price. Sad but true. You are buying a high end designer setting, that''s why the high price tag comes with it. You asked for advice and we gave it. Good luck negotiating, never hurts to try. Can we help you find a similar setting with the same antique feel for less???

For me it was about the whole package as well. The style of the setting was very important to me, and getting a big stone was not on my agenda. If your girlfriend has expressed these same wishes, then your choice of the engraved setting with a 0.5 ctw stone is perfect. You want the ring to be something she is excited about wearing right away.

If you have looked at many settings and this is the one you like the best (and think she would like the best) then I''d say you are done shopping.

Choose a lively stone, and you will have nothing to worry about.

Will do - thanks.

The lucky lady will NOT be happy with a simple setting and a huge rock. Not at all. When she was ring shopping with me to give me ideas, the rock was the last thing on her mind. I know exactly what she will do when I put it on her finger:

1) Cry
2) Cry
3) Say yes - hopefully
4) look at it on her finger
5) take it off and spend the next 5 min looking at the intricate work on the ring

somewhere around #10 is where she will think about the diamond individually.

The ring/diamond importance ration is somewhere around 70/30

Do a search for Sister''s on this site. People do buy Tacori there at a discount.

~~When I saw the link to the Tacori ring, I thought "That ring looks really familiar." So with a little searching, I found that NJC has the same exact ring, but the diamond is 0.75ct. I think it looks great with that style (esp. because the prongs on this Tacori setting aren''t as prominent as they are on some of their other rings), and the ring looks really dainty!!
