With what has been said here, would it be prudent to hang on to, for instance, the excellent 0.60 diamonds I've been collecting or won't the increases have that much effect. What is the advice for consumers?

I believe the NYT article answered my question. Diamonds aren't nearly as good an investment as a stock fund.
They're just a lot prettier and more fun.
