Could those with Supernova cut gems please post pictures of them and discuss their thoughts about them? Also if anyone has any information about the cut itself that would be great.

Here are a couple pics of my tourmaline from Berry. I like the supernova cut, but I like his rounds better. My supernova has much less of a tilt window than my other ovals.

Here''s my supernova pink tourmaline - 7.7 x 10 x 7.35mm deep. I''ve only tried this stone in a few settings, and in some, the depth was an issue and the culet touched the top of my finger. I do like the cut better than most ovals because of the lack of bowtie and the chunky facets - it''s really beautiful.

Thanks for the info and pics so far.

The Supernova cut is similar to a Barion cut style, but is even deeper. Looking at most attractive stones cut in the Supernova pattern and you can see that they are often pale to medium in color saturation. The depth of this cut adds to the color and gives a very good show in these materials. If your cutter is going to be cutting darker materials for you or has rough which isn''t as deep as needed for this cut, then they can use one of the shallower Barion styles such as the Omni Oval styles. The down side to any of these cuts is that their deep pavilion angles often require a deeper setting and thicker prongs,(so that the lower part of the seats can be cut properly and retain adequate strength). This isn''t usually a problem unless the setting chosen is an antique style which are often close to the finger. The attached picture is of a "silver" zircon cut in the Omni Oval pattern, showing the more numerous and thinner pavilion facets. When cut at the correct angles this pattern also shows no bow-tie. If your cutter doesn''t have this pattern, a little Googling will provide a number of freebie diagrams which can be easily modified to suit the material you prefer.

I love me some supernova. This was my first "colored" stone. I have more than just this one though, but I have the most, and easiest to find pictures of this one. The big one is 7.4cts and the smaller is 4.45. Both were cut by Barry.

Here is a shot of just the necklace.

This is one I just did with Diamond Hill (South Carolina) Amethyst. The photo is not so hot. I had to square the sides to remove a tiny flaw that was at the edge.

This is the faceting diagram for the 5x7 variant. I can''t remember if I reordered this one or not. The book and the database disagreed on the cut order (which seems to be typical of Long and Steel.)

I really like this cut. It reminds me a little of old mine cushions, with the high crown and deep belly, but the faceting is different.

I think my tsavorite from Barry is a supernova. Whatever it is, I really like the cut, very chunky and flashy and gorgeous :)

It is.

To clarify, it is a supernova, it is chunky, and it''s also flashy and gorgeous!

Timely thread-these supernovas are really starting to sway me!

You know packie, I was thinking about you when I was reading your three stone ring thread--I think that the supernova would be an excellent cut for what you''re looking for--you mentioned not wanting bowtie extinction, and that''s specifically (well, from what I''ve been told) what the supernova was created to eradicate. The supernova also does not typically do the half and half extinction that some other cuts exhibit. I think you should look into it.

Thanks Freke-I''m really leaning towards this cut now! I want something white or really pale at least, and when Michael E said that above about looking best in pale to medium saturations, that made a lightbulb go on. It looks like it makes every stone sparkle like the dickens. I''ll have to look into it and think of what kind of pale color I might want.

Thanks for the clarification Freke! I guess I can add mine then.
Are all of Barry''s ovals supernovas?

I''m pretty sure they are. I know he usually sticks to his chunky style cuts. Occasionally he''ll go with a more classic cushion shape, but he almost always goes for the supernova over any other oval cuts. And I''ve never seen a different round cut from him!

Here is mine - a green tourmaline from Barry. I love this stone and the cut but I''m having a heck of a time setting it.

Hey Freke - I''ve seen him cut and post something he calls the "paradise round"; looks very similar to his regular rounds, may have a couple more facets though? Haven''t seen one IRL but the photos looked really pretty

I adore Barry''s supernova''s and have...four now

Oddoneout, here is a pic of two - an aqua and a blue-green tourmaline.
I also own a blue tourmaline and a yellow beryl, which is set in a bezel ring. I just love the chunky facets and the fun outline of them!
I will be happy to come back with more pics when I have a lil more time if need be

I am currently having the remainder of my supernova''s set into a suite of jewellery with Julia Taylor, and cannot wait to finally wear them!

Thank you for all the great pics. Thanks also for more explanations about the cut.

Yes, he does this cut too, but it requires a little extra depth, and the stone can't be too dark. It's similar to a zircon cut, but has a slight asymmetry that eliminates any facet junction light leakage. I really like this type of asymmetry in cuts, and it's one of the reasons why I also like Gene's star80 so much.

Here is Lori's silver/pink topaz in the paradise brilliant cut:

My mistake. I meant that I had never seen him cut an oval shape besides the supernova. I happen to own a couple paradise rounds, and actually have the stone of Lori''s that cellentani posted in my possession currently.

Psst AJ..did you scrap your oval 3 stone w/the double bezels? I went thru that thread again yesterday when I was browsing ovals, and wondered how it had panned out.
