I''ve seen lots of posts that mention "super ideal cut." The term is also used on some vendor sites. I''m confused - when I check the PS tutorial, vendor tutorials, or the AGS site I can''t find a definition. I only find "Ideal" as the top cut grade and no definition for "super ideal."

Is "super" just a marketing term?

This newbie needs some education. /idealbb/images/smilies/read.gif

Yes, because there is no "official", trade recognized definition of the term. My definition may differ from what someone else would tell you.

Hello Ricardo,

For our purposes at Whiteflash, "Super Ideal Cut" describes a diamond cut to AGS0 standards which further displays internal symmetry so precise that a pristine "Hearts and Arrows" pattern results within the stone.

Vendors offering "Super Ideal" and/or "Hearts and Arrows" diamonds have differing standards, so it pays to do some homework in order to find the right match for your needs, interests and budget. Pricescope is the best place to learn.

Here is more info on Hearts and Arrows "Super Ideal Cut."

The 'super ideal' cuts, H & A cuts, Ultra Ideal,......are often the exact same thing, but different terms by different vendors.

for instance, WhiteFlash, USCert, Abazias, and DirtCheap may have different terms for diamonds, but list a single diamond under each of their descriptions. In other words an individual diamond with a specific GIA cert number is listed by all these vendors, therefore there terms all refer to the exact same thing.

It means 'cream of the crop' from cutting stand point.

If the term "Ideal" was not misused or overly used, there would be no need for further adjectives to describe diamonds as finer than the best.... It is nonsensical, but that is the way the term "Ideal" has been used, too liberally.

To the human eye, I believe all diamonds graded as Ideal, meaning the present AGS 000, would be very lovely stones. Some would be a bit less beautiful than others. We make a big deal of this sometimes, but it is not of tremendous importance other than we love to argue, split hairs and have issues to discuss. Many of us want to be sure we buy or sell only the very best. With the problematic misuse of the word Ideal, one must resort to further words to categorize those special stones which are truly better than others within the Ideal frame of reference. Therefore we get the use of Super, Ultra,,,etc. They may not be all that much superior, as there is no standard frame of reference for determining where Ultra or Super begin, but sellers and consumers who seek the very best need this terminology when it is properly applied.
