Stumbled upon a 2.5 ct fancy yellow brown diamond and need help!

@Wink Do you think this should be a pass? Nothing against brown. I know I’ll likely buy a yellow diamond with some brown in it, but I want it to be more yellow...

I cannot offer a go or a pass as it would be a violation of forum policies since I am in the trade. Even if I was allowed to offer a go or a pass, I would not, since it will not be my money the diamond is purchased with. You must decide about this based on your feelings about the color. My comment was to let you know that I do not feel the brown can be influenced very much by the setting of this diamond.

Oh, I misspoke about brown being the dominant color. As has been correctly stated a brownish yellow would clearly be yellow dominant. A brown-yellow indicates an equal share of color. Obviously, I should not respond while still waiting for my morning coffee to brew.

@LightBright @bludiva @Wink

Sorry if I missed some people. I’m doing this on mobile. But I’ll pass on this stone. I know you’re all right about the brown thing and it bothers me more and more as I keep thinking about it. Thank you for all for your input it was very helpful!

If you really want a nice ‘yellow’, I will echo others’ suggestions to reach out to David at Diamonds by Lauren. He has an amazing inventory, and is very personable and lovely to deal with (from my personal buying experience).

I was actually looking to buy something else when that came up. I figured for the price why not if it can look yellow. But I will definitely reach out to David when I’m ready to pursue a yellow diamond. I check their website periodically too. Such nice stuff!

Just to throw something else into the ring (pun intended? lol  ) check out Yoram's listings in the Gemconcepts boutique / sold section - he's either listing or has listed some tinted diamonds cut for light performance rather than colour enhancement, which is a different look/approach that could be interesting! :))

What I find with MRB is that its not really cut for color, However, I've had many Fancy Brownish yellow/ brow yellow green yellow... all sorts. they vary widely..
my newest is a 3.35 ct GIA Fancy Light Brownish Yellow, sorry crappy phone pics.
I also have a greenish brownish yellow and it changes from champagne, sometimes showing green to yellowish at time

The image color showing with my W/X color is what I see the most.

I would say if a there is a good return policy these FCDs with modifier is very tricky, and only you know if you'll like the modifiers in the FCDs. and play around with chains if you have several white/yellow/rose gold. that would help. I like amping up whatever color so I would choose either Yellow Gold or Rose Gold if its more on the brown side? then white surrounding the outside, otherwise I think using white around any of the FCDs tends to wash out the color, but this is just my opinion and what I like for myself.

oh and this is what the sunflower halo diamond used to be in a sholdt all yellow gold: you can see the tinge of green brown and yellow here

D&T shows some great examples. All stones are different! Maybe you could also try looking for a W/X or other low color “yellow” looking stone that hasn’t been classified as fancy.

If you want light yellow without the premium, X-Z GIA in anything but RB (shapes even in OEC) would be much more 'yellow" like my Oval, or even a marquise.

this marquise is a 2.5ct W GIA....I'm kicking myself that I might/should have gotten it sad :((

FWIW here's a comparison of video grab vs. IRL photos for the stone in my avatar. this is a fancy light brownish yellow. the video had a duskier tone compared to how the stone looks in reality. photos tend to capture more color than i see with my eyes too. what i see is a pale yellow.

i agree with the other posters that with these types of stones photos and videos won't tell you everything about the color. also good advice on looking for W-Z stones. if you're not set on a round, cushions and radiants will have more saturated yellow color. if a yellow stone is cut to round brilliant proportions, i think it would tend to look lighter than its color grade just due to the nature of the cut.

good luck with the search!

@bludiva
I love:love::love::love: your ring/diamond everything! I didn't realize it was an FCD! I love them! in MRB its a different type of coloring/performance. Cut for performance for sure, and reduces the saturation... fully agree with this!

It's very nice! What color do you see most often?

Your oval is gorgeous! That marquise too. Someone here has a big, beautiful yellow marquise that I sometimes pop in to look at.

I've been looking at cushions in that range but I think round is my jam. I've also been looking at OECs but those have all been out of my price range... I'm considering buying Mrs. B's cushions and turning that into a toi et moi style ring while I look for the right yellow cushion (to turn it into a 3 stone), but I'm still thinking that idea through.

I love your ring! I feel like that's what the one I had on hold looked like (kind of in the videos) and now I'm wondering if maybe I should order it to see it. I'd hate to have that money tied up and something more interesting pops up in the mean time... Did it look any different after you set it?

Got back to a proper screen so I can link to the Yoram rock I was thinking of! :)

This is pretty! I'm going to have to start watching this website too. Thanks for sharing!

I must admit it’s been at DK after a few days of having it with me so I can’t remember it well lol but it is yellow with a hint of brown was what I noticed, but it also has med blue fluoro.

@D&T would fluorescence affect color in a diamond like that?

blue fluoro does wash a bit out in certain lighting, mostly outside is what I've noticed, I had one diamond that was more on the green side with blue fluro it made it look a bit neon outdoors in some lighting, it was cool. my Oval has Blue Fluoro but most times it looks yellow, my Greenish brownish yellow in the sunflower halo has faint yellow fluoro helps the yellow I feel a bit, but its very negligible to most people I suspect, I have had so many that I've begun to notice these nuances. I believe in strong sunlight the effect lessened the W/X saturation, but I love fluoro and to me that doesn't hinder me a bit, only if the fluoro is so strong that causes a little haziness. but the diamonds I have now all have med. to faint fluoro.

anyways back to what you are trying to do?
To match a pair would be very difficult with the modifiers unless the vendor has them both in hand and can cherry pick them together, so if you are trying to pair out a three stone piece meal and want them to be similar in color saturation and hue, it might be better to go with DBL or someone that deals in FCDs as to help you get those suite.

Thank you! It didn't really look different after setting. We debated wg vs yg basket and putting it on various backgrounds didn't do anything for the color. It has med blue flouro as well. I think the biggest difference may come from everything being so magnified in the video and photos. I just remembered, it does look brown under halogen lights. Look up cflutists queen pari (qp) stone, she has photos under lots of lighting conditions.

This is what I ended up with doing with the 3.35ct Fancy Light Brownish Yellow, this also has Blue Fluoro:

@winnietucker if you aren’t going to purchase this diamond do you mind sharing where it can be found?

It was on B2C but I can’t see it anymore on their website. Maybe someone bought it?

@D&T Beautiful......Did DK do this for you as well? I would love to know more about the marquise if you don't mind sharing. :)

All these warm diamonds are gorgeous!

It is too difficult to tell saturation / undertones in light transparent colours - light & everything around matters.

It took a while to find out that a certain colour I wish for is Light brownish Yellow in GIA terms - SPQR etc.; less light yellows - up to Fancy Yellow look that way in low light; prices make sense - it takes some space to admire subtleties.

Hi :wavey:
the marquise was around 14mm ish but it was at a show, that I cannot remember who sold it over a month ago. so sorry, can't tell you much more other than it also had blue fluorescence.

Thanks! I would totally buy this if I were in the market. But I definitely think it will look brownish, and if that will make you unhappy then I think not buying it is the right choice.

I agree. I'm going to see if I can sell of my current rings and piece together my dream rings.
