I'm planning to customise a really tiny 4 prongs to hold my diamond, any suggestion on what's the best metal for the prongs if one desire to customise them smaller than average?
I was suggested 14k white gold for prongs, is this the best options?
Stuller 14k x1 white gold in my opinion is likely the toughest of the easily available alloys.
There are some heat treatable platinum alloys that are awesome but they are hard to find.
You can't buy findings (that means parts) made out of x1 so I doubt that's an option.
The wear properties of platinum and white gold are rather different. Platinum is softer and it abrades faster, but gold is more 'springy' and it's easier to break a prong off entirely. In general, if the setter does their job right, both are fine.
Tiny prongs require a special type of setter. Very fine work is far more difficult and costly than average commercial work.
Smaller prongs that are still secure are a mark of very fine workmanship.
Such a setter will know what sort of metal will work best in the specific application.
