Hi Guys,

I am very new here and looking for engagement diamond ring. I know this has been probably mentioned a million times and sorry for mentioning it again, but after much search, i am narrowed down to only two diamonds left. One however in particular has Strong Blue fluorescence shown in GIA report.

GIA research in 1997 said that in most if not almost all cases, Strong Blue will not cause 'milky and hazy' looks or affect the brilliance even under direct sun light, but then also many so claimed experts in diamond (watch youtube) are staying away from Medium or Strong blue fluorescence.

I like this diamond for it's a very nice VS2 and the cut proportions sounds like a super cut proportions for H&A as well as scores very well under HCA. Unfortunately, since i am buying this online, there is no way i can tell if it will be milky/hazy until i personally inspect it myself.

What is the chances that a Strong blue can affect/create milky/hazy looks? Are these so called "professionals" are scaring people off, or their opinion is genuine and i better off look for none/faint stone?

I have included the picture of the diamond as well as the GIA report.

Thank you very much for your kind help on this matter!

I trust gia in there statement that less than 0.2% of fluor diamonds have those negative effects, but regardless of what percentage, it can't tell you if this specific one has issues or not. Who are you buying from? A reputable vendor will be honest about the fluor. Otherwise how's the return period?

Personally I love fluor I think its neat! And would prefer it over a stone without one.

Does the vendor provide any other images such as Idealscope? That will help you assess light performance more accurately than just basing it off the HCA.

That said it looks beautiful in the pic!

I was reading here just the other day that less than 0.2% of all stones with fluor will show milkiness or haziness. Which seems in line with GIA's conclusions. Some (ignorant) sales people (usually in B&M stores) will try to steer you away from them believing that fluor is somehow bad, but around here it is often a sought after property because it is just so freaking cool! :)

I have a D w/ SBF and I love it. It turns the stone a beautiful cool white bordering on very light baby blue in the sun, which I adore.

I know you said it is coming from an online vendor - do they have it in hand? Can't they just walk outside and look at it?

Re: Strong Blue in this F colour diamond, need advise. thank

The vendor is online store only and their source are the same source from even big names such as blue nile. What this also means is that idealscope image is not available. Return period is 30 days like blue nile and i have option to see the actual image of the diamond as well as when it is fitted in the ring before they ship it for final approval.

i spoke with them about fluorescence the other day and their answer is pretty much said that it generally does not have impact in colour or brilliance.

i watched several videos in youtube with strong fluorescence vs none and personally, they look equally bright/brilliance and the blue colour actually adds a special characteristic for the diamond.

So it's pretty much safe to conclude that Strong fluorescence in diamond that can creates hazy/milky/oily are only about 0.2% out there and the rest 99.8% of Strong fluorescence diamonds are perfectly fine even in colorless diamond ?

Can they ship you the ring before it is set for inspection?

Re: Strong Blue in this F colour diamond, need advise. thank

Well, they can ship it to me before inspection, but i would rather them to inspect it first for me when they receive it in their hand, take lots of photos and videos and if i am happy, proceed with set it in the ring, take more photos for final confirmation and then ship it to me.

This is why they are self proclaimed experts. If they were truly experts they would keep up with the modern research and they would look for themselves and not be bound by "rules" that were made during the diamond investment craze of the late 1970's when people who had been ladies shoe clerks were now "diamond experts' manning a phone line and selling investment diamonds to people who should have known better than to trust them. Since they could not learn how to judge a diamond and what it looked like they disparaged fluorescence and the stones that we once paid a premium for went for a discount because of their inability to make individual decisions on a stone by looking at it.

I am a known fluorescent stone lover, so take my comments with a grain or three of salt, but the only way you will know if you love it as much as I and thousands of others do is to see it for yourself. If the so called "professionals" as you call them are scaring people off, then you can tell them that I say they are so called (expletive deleted). Do yourself a favor and see the stone yourself, but only after asking the vendor if this one is one of the oh so rare that does go a little hazy. If he says it is not, then see it for yourself, but only if you have the right to return it, which you should have for ANY stone that you buy.

Wink who is feeling a little cranky this evening, sorry if I offended any one.

Which is why they still sell for a discount from a paper marked NONE. Thank goodness, those of us who love it get it for less money.

Sweet.
