I need some help on what to do. first off I am new here. I signed up because I have some questions on a scam about jewelry. About three weeks ago I saw a charge on my wifes CC for 5k. It was for Jewelry. We don't buy jewelry on line or really locally much for that matter not to mention for 5k. I called my CC company and we disputed the charge. Today the postman rang the bell and wanted a signature for a registered mail package. I was not expecting a package. I opened it and it was a neck-less appraised at 6k. It came with an apprised card. My first thought was it was a 20 dollar neck-less and they sold it for 5k. I called the appraiser and looked on line and they seem to be small but legit. So if its real where is the scam? Anyone ever heard of this? I am taking it into my local jewelry shop to see if it is indeed real.

If I didn't order said item and was charged thousands of dollars for it I would not be taking it to be appraised.. I'd be calling the person who charged my credit card and sent me the item.

The point of taking it to the MLJS is to see if it is indeed real or if I was sent something fake. I am sending nothing to anyone just yet. I don't know what kind of scam this is and could be playing right into it. First things first. Second I am paying nothing to send anything back. If I need to send it back they will have to pay me first for shipping. This has nothing to do with my in any way.

Are you taking it to be appraised as your wife was charged 5k and the appraisal says 6k, so you're assuming you'll be better off keeping it?!

If so, appraisals can be utterly meaningless, depending on who issued it and for what purpose.

Personally, I think you're weakening your case for fraud by having it assessed - as WestJenn said, it doesn't matter whether it's real or fake if you didn't want it, didn't buy it and didn't authorise the credit card payment then I think the vast majority of people would send it back and alert the credit company asap.

If it is a scam, I suspect you're falling right into it by thinking the appraisal is the true value of what you've been sent!

You missed the point entirely. I called the appraiser who issued the appraisal it came with in the package. I am taking it to my local Jewelry shop to not have it appraised but looked at to see if it is what its said to be. 20k gold and 1860s or some fake piece of jewelry. Second I am not paying to send anything back. If it is legit and needs to go back then the sender can send me a shipping label. I am not paying to a thing here. My question was has anyone heard of this kind of scam. If the piece is valuable I can not figure out where the scam is. It did not come in my name but some fictitious name. I don't even know how they would have been able to charge my wife's card using the name Christopher. Posting here may have been an adventure in futility.

Don't waste your time working out if and what a scam may be. Phone the credit card company to put a stop on the payment and ask them what they want you to do with the necklace. Job done.

That was done before I did anything else.

To answer your original question: I have never heard of such a scam. It makes zero sense for anyone to purchase a 5 THOUSAND dollar necklace using your credit card and ship it to your billing address. No sense whatsoever.

Very likely the scam is that the piece is worth far less than $5000, but you're expected to look at the "appraisal" and keep it because you think you're getting a bargain. That's the simplest scenario; scams can get much more elaborate than that. One of my coworkers nearly got arrested due to an internet scam (not out of the question here, if you're dealing with stolen goods).

Personally, I'd call the post office to report this as a fraud (http://about.usps.com/publications/pub300a/pub300a_tech_024.htm). I'd also call my local police Dept to report this, but I'm guessing the scammers are targeting people in towns with smaller police departments.

One last thought... is there any chance your wife did indeed order this?

By the way, I believe the scam that my coworker and then nearly got arrested for involves using him – without his knowledge of course – as part of a money laundering operation. By "nearly got arrested" I mean he and his wife were at the bank to deposit the money they'd gotten from an online sale, or get a cashiers check to refund an "overpayment, or something… And they turned around and found themselves surrounded by FBI agents ready to arrest them.

I just got back from my local Jewelry store. Steve is great and has been around helping people here for 40 years. He said he sees a version of this all the time here in SWF. A company gets, buys a credit card no. Sends out 6k worth of gold and charges the card 20k. He said it was just a version of that. He said the necklace was worth about 600 to 1200 tops. I called my CC and talked to the fraud dept. They told me I did not order it they reversed the charge and to keep it. Steve said that disreputable company's will take a chance to make a few thousand dollars. Just as you said VR, someone would look at the appraisal and figure they were getting a bargain.

Wow.

If someone has your CC info and is using it you need to contact the major credit unions and put a fraud alert on all of your accounts. Check daily for charges. Most CC companies will not do anything about "pending" charges so you need to be ready for when they hit your account. Check your bank and have any debit cards cancelled and re-issued. I am very surprised you CC bank has not cancelled your card and sent you a new one. Very strange.

Your post is much more than a jewelry scam post. Someone is threatening your financial security and maybe even your identity. Please take action to protect yourself.

I had the card canceled the day I saw the charge and had it removed as fraudulent. My wife is very careful of her card, but there are a lot of skimmers here in SWF. They will put them on gas pumps all the time here and they are hard to tell there is anything there not normal.

Glad you have protected yourself. :)

And this is why I prefer paying in cash... lol

Wow... I've never heard of this one before so thank you for posting it. And for your trouble, you have a $600 necklace to ebay off.. good for you.

This is such a weird story. Can't the sender of the necklace be traced?

I'm still not sure I'm any clearer on how this scam is supposed to work...
