My boyfriend proposed last Saturday with a 1.51 K SI2 oval diamond in a rose gold setting with 52 melee (.5). It’s a beautiful ring that has lovely sparkle and fire outdoors and in some indoor locations depending on the lighting. After my boyfriend proposed he told me about his shopping experience at I.D Jewelry. Back in January we had stopped at IDJ when we went to NYC for a mini vacation. Before pricescope or any diamond research I always said I wanted a 2 carat diamond..then I saw 2 carat diamond prices and knew that wouldn’t be happening Lol. I was still torn between a round or oval diamond. When I saw a one carat round and oval diamond I felt extremely underwhelmed (I’m 5’11 and have bigger hands). Ovals face up bigger, so I asked for a 1.20 carat J colored eye clean SI1 and pricescope quality. While they were getting a 1.20 J from the vault she showed me a 1.50 k SI2 that I really liked. When the j colored 1.20 came out and I compared the two I could see that the J 1.20 was whiter, but to me the color difference wasn’t worth sacrificing the size difference. My boyfriend wasn’t ready to purchase just yet, but we took down the Gia number for reference.

About 6 weeks later he reached out to them hoping to propose around my birthday. The diamond was still available, so after asking all his questions he was ready to buy the diamond and setting. They asked for a $200 deposit,so they could hold diamond for him. He said he wanted to pay for the entire ring in full through a wire transfer. They wrote up the receipt and sent him details on how to wire the money. He sent the money the same day as he got the details. Wire transfers do take about a day to go through, so once he got confirmation that the wire transfer had been completed he planned to call them. He had a missed call from NYC number which he called back during his break at work. IDJ had called to tell him that the diamond he payed for had been sold to someone else:eek2:. Needless to say he was very upset; especially then he was shown a a diamond that was $800 more than the one he had paid for as a replacement for the one they sold. He told them that this was over his budget. The gemologist then found a diamond with almost identical dimensions as the original diamond, but still $376 more than the one he paid for initially. I think it was around this point he was really frustrated and asked to talk to Yekutiel. He told him that he delivered his end of the deal and they didn’t by buy selling the diamond to someone else and asked “what could he do for him”. They ended up working out that he would pay another $185 via PayPal. Lesson learned if they ask for a deposit put down the deposit and then wire the rest of the money.

I never got an idealscope or aset for this diamond, but I’m happy with the way it performs. The Gia report is from August 2015, is this a concern? I’m guessing it was a trade in. I found a video of the diamond on amiador.

Just based off the video, it’s not a diamond I would have picked. In person I don’t see any of the inclusions and believe me I’ve looked :lol-2:. I thought I might have seen some in very dim lighting when visiting my mom. The oval does a have a bow tie, but I only see it in certain lighting conditions or when taking photos of it. I feel like pictures don’t do it justice. It looks much prettier in person.
Does anyone have diamond that didn’t look that great in pictures or a video, but looked nice in person as well?

A few pictures

Love your ring and setting! It's beautiful.

I feel your struggle with pictures. I'm pretty sure my OEC is on the shallow side so it suffers a bit from obstruction. It's pretty hard to get a picture of it dead center. IRL it's very pretty, super sparkly so that's enough for me!

Pictures can be very hard...thank goodness for digital cameras where we can take about a 100 to end up with just a few good ones!

Your stone and setting look beautiful on you! I'm glad you were able to figure out what was important to you (size vs color).
Congratulations on your engagement!!!

It’s very beautiful. Congratulation on your engagement.
Sorry about your unfortunate experience with your first chosen diamond.
The advantage of the internet is that you can find diamonds from all around, the downside is that often vendors are using “virtual” inventory ie it’s not actually in their physical possession and other vendors might have the same diamond also listed on their website(s).
When the “buy order” goes through it might take a few days for everyone else to get notification that that particular one has been sold - this is probably what happened to you. It’s “first past the post” with the deposit that secures the diamond. So while you’re organizing your payment someone else is a day or two ahead of you in the process unbeknownst to anyone else.

That's disappointing about your original diamond. You said they showed it to you which suggests it was in their inventory and not virtual. If that was the the case, it would have been nicer of them not to charge you for the difference between the stones IMO.

Nevertheless, your ring and stone are beautiful. Congratulations and wear it in good health!

Thank you ladies!
Yes, they had it in their inventory. Apparently someone came to the store with the full payment in hand and bought it while my boyfriend’s wire transfer was in process. I feel the same way that matching the price would have been the way to go.

Your stone and setting are beautiful. I love the little claw prongs and the rose gold. It looks to be the perfect size on your hand. :kiss2:

Can you post some side shots of the profile and the pave?

If it makes you feel better, I have an “I”
Colored Whiteflash ACA (superideal cut) that looks like crap in most iPhone photos that I take

Your ring is beautiful! Congrats on your engagement!
