Stoplight red or pigeon blood ruby stone for men's ring

Thanks! It's GRS certified for their pigeon blood descriptor which I guess is a plus but I do prefer on the darker side so not fussed- pinkish/purplish is beautiful but not for this buy

Length: 7.77
Width: 4.91
Height: 2.33
Weight:1.04 Ct at $7770 per carat

It’s Mozambique ruby, just so you are aware, won’t have good fluorescence like Burmese ruby. I see that the depth is less than 50% but don’t see noticeable windowing, which is a good thing.

Yeah if I could find something burmese - comparable colouring with good certification and similar-ish pricing I would (more for the sentimental reasons than anything else to be honest), but can't seem to do so. I know with emerald step cuts windowing and extinction are more of a concern so definitely appreciate the eyes on that!

It will be exceedingly difficult to find a 1+ct step cut Burma ruby, no heat, good color and clarity for around 8k. I found this one but it is probably closer to 15k or more. Not a cheap seller but has a high reputation here. I also suspect the color is not 'stoplight' red enough for you.

I dug up an old screenshot from a no closed-down seller (AJS gems) who had a few step cut, heated Burmese rubies around 1ct. This screenshot is from late 2022. I couldn't find anything available but the screenshot suggests that if you are ok with heat then it is possible to find such a stone in your budget, it'll just take a while. If you are ok with a common shape like oval, it will make the search easier.

Burmese spinel is a good option as brought up above.

If you still want a ruby I found something.
I do not recommend this stone, but its something that came up that fits your general criteria. 1stdibs, I assume, has some sort of blanket buyer satisfaction guarantee/return policy.

1.21ct, Burmese no heat per AIGS report (which I believe is well respected, but not a top lab like AGL, SSEF). I wouldn't give weight to their 'pigeon blood' designation though. I'd guess those photos are doctored, and it ends up darker IRL, which may be similar to the color of the stone in the original post you linked.

It has an elongated rectangle shape, so it is again similar to the first you linked. It appears to have some inclusions but the nature of them is not possible to determine from the photos or video.

Dunno, but my gut feeling is its at least worth investigating if something like this is what you want (messaging seller, asking for more accurate photos/details). If one of the ruby experts wants to weigh in then by all means!

Oh and the price is 8.5k on 1stdibs. It is 8k on GemRockAuctions and you can make an offer. I have dealt with neither site, and I do not know how they behave especially when things go wrong.

That’s a pretty stone but as you said, I can see dark inclusions. Also don’t like how Gemrockauctions designate the transparency as translucent though 1stdibs listing says it’s translucent. As for colour there is a purple modifier per AIGS report, despite pigeon blood designation. Worthwhile investigating for OP still.

Good catch on the 'purplish' in the AIGS report, since OP mentioned he does not want an overly purplish or pinkish stone. And the translucency grading on 1stdibs - that is strange since it seems clean enough to be transparent just with some unflattering inclusions, but who knows... also the title of the listing says 'transparent'. Odd. Anyway, something has got to give for a nice Burma ruby over 1ct for around 8k (esp when OP seems to want a less common cut/shape), I think you have recent experience with that

Personally, to OP, I would rather save more for a nicer Burmese stone, go smaller for a nicer Burmese stone with the current budget, or go with a great non-Burmese stone that still has strong fluorescence (but I get that you want Burma origin for sentimental reasons).

When I was looking, the only actual step cut (emerald or asscher) no-heat Burma rubies of high quality I could find, were a couple half-caraters from Hancocks, already set in rings. Without the premium from this jeweller and without the setting, the stones themselves one would assume would fit in OP's budget. But not easy finding one loose in the wild.

To my eye, the entire center of the stone is one giant window.

I obviously don’t know how to check for windowing!

If you were to place that gem over a large print letter, you would be able to read the print. That is a classical window. This one may not look like windowing, because there is nothing behind it to read.

I did not mean to come off as rude and I hope I did not. I was a jeweler from mid 1975 through somewhere in 2020. I am now retired and shooting photos for an occasional sale , but mostly because I love to shoot. I made it to Portugal this year, then the Badlands National Park in South Dakota and finally to Italy this year. Photography is my new love.

I only come here once in a while now, but I was notified because of the word Wink in your post. I am glad to stop by once in awhile, and I sincerely hope I did not offend you.

No offence taken, I was self-deprecating when I said I don’t know anything about windowing. I am not good at picking it. Thank you for your informative post. Have a great day!
