Hello Team!

The quest for earstuds continues. I have found a pair, which i think ticks most of my boxes. They are E, almost identical in size etc, 1 carat each, s12, but seem to be eye clean ( I am visiting them on saturday), triple EX. They are a good price (approx 35% under rap), but/because they both have strong blue florescence (with no milkiness).

I really cant get my head around this florescence thing.. I have read a lot. I understand that it used to be an upsell charged at a premium "blue whites", then gia changed their minds and made it a bad thing, hence the low price. I just spoke to a jeweller, his only answer was in a nightclub they will glow blue. I said i thought that was cool, but he said that "people think that flourescene is bad, so they feel dumb if they light up in a club"

I know that low colours appear whiter with FL. And high colours may appear darker, so what colour will an E with strong flouro look?

So am I saving 35% because I have no problem looking dumb in a nightclub?! Will people honestly point and say "silly woman, look at her 1ct diamond studs that are rubbish because they glow neon". Personally I think its super cool that they will glow in the dark! (not that I go to clubs that often hahah)

Please enlighten me, as I am very confused.

Thank you

I'm sure much more experienced people will post, but I just wanted to chime in with my two cents...I have an L with strong blue fluoro, and honestly I only notice it when it's in direct sunlight, and it's really cool! I personally love it since I think it makes my diamond more unique. I know my diamond is low colored, but if they're going to be studs, how often are you even going to be able to notice the fluorescence? And how close are people going to be getting to you to notice the blue in certain lighting situations? I think if you think it's cool, then you should definitely consider them! :) HTH

Re: stong blue in a pair of E 1carat rounds? will i look sil

I see it as a positive and a cool thing, to have the SB fluorescence! If they are not milky - and you'll know if you like it or not when you 'meet your stones' on the weekend - then the SB only does show up under UV light. It will make the diamonds look brighter, generally speaking, and if you are not a big club person, would the neon glow be seen that often? probably not.

If you are out in clubs - I think that would be super cool!!!

Hi SJ!

Thanks for the input. Actually without seeming sillier than I am, when you say you notice it in daylight, what do you mean? Do they flash blue? Im quite happy to have found very good cut, 2 carat total weight studs for my budget, but if they are going to look strange then of course i wont get them...

Do you have any photos of your stone in daylight? Im sure others would be interested too!

Thank you again!

cool, well i think its kinda cool too! But i am worried about an E looking like a I etc. therefore my 35% saving would be a waste etc... Im very excited to meet them!

I have an E colored diamond with slight blue flouro and it just has a faint blue color in the sunlight. I personally love it but I have never seen a stone with strong blue flouro.

Here are a few photos of a stone with strong blue flouro in the sunlight:

Re: stong blue in a pair of E 1carat rounds? will i look sil

I have a diamond with SBF and I have yet to really notice any color from the fluoro at all. In the brightest sunlight shining directly on the stone, I can slightly see a tinge of blue, but you can also see the sky reflected in that circumstance, so it really isn't noticeable to anyone else. I don't go to nightclubs, but I guess you can either wear different earrings when you go or else be the center of attention with your glowing studs! I'd go for them if excellent/ideal cut and the inclusions are invisible.

It may have a slight blue tint in sunlight. IMO it looks awesome when it does that.

Rock the Disco Diamonds! YAY, for studs I don't mind fluorescence at all...and your hair will block direct sun more often than not anyway. Take advantage of that discount, sounds AWESOME! and to find 1ct matched pairs in that color clarity is a steal. Good luck.

This is fascinating, thank you! I think this stone is beyond stunning, it looks almost ethereal! If my studs look like this, then I would be super happy.

I know they are not hearts and arrows like, these, and are si2, not vvs2, but its a great video thanks, and has put my mind at rest...

Re: stong blue in a pair of E 1carat rounds? will i look sil

I have a small BGD blue and I hardly ever get to see the blue. I wish I could see it more often...I. think its way cool.

I think if you found a matching pair and they are slightly discounted because GIA decided its not a good thing...well to me that
makes you a smart shopper (not silly at all) . Who cares about those rare times they glow!

Re: stong blue in a pair of E 1carat rounds? will i look sil

I hope you mean reserve them! You can't buy them without seeing them! Do you have the numbers off the GIA certs? Also, you have to carefully examine them with your eyes for the inclusions.

Re: stong blue in a pair of E 1carat rounds? will i look sil

Sushi, I have a pear e-ring with strong blue fluor and wore it for 20 years without even noticing that it would turn a light shade of blue in direct sun! I only began to take note of it because of what I recently learned on PS. I have read a lot about blue fluor since and rely on what Garry H. has written about this subject on PS. I don't ever remember reading that the higher colored stones are darker because of fluor. My pear is an F color and the fluor in it just makes it turn blue in direct sun. In indirect sun, it's an icy blue-white. If anything, I think it enhances the the diamond's color. It sounds to me like you have a great find! Here's a photo of my pear in filtered direct sun.

Re: stong blue in a pair of E 1carat rounds? will i look sil

Thanks, Sushi! I've always loved your pear and setting. BTW, I should add that the blue characteristic in my stone comes and goes as you turn it side to side and is more noticeable to the eye at certain distances. It doesn't stay that blue continuously in the direct sun as my photo is showing. I had to catch it just right on the camera for the photo. The intensity of the sun's uv levels also plays a role in how much the stone will react and turn blue.

Re: stong blue in a pair of E 1carat rounds? will i look sil

The fluors does not bother me much.

The pricing is something you should give more thought. "35% below Rap" does not mean all that much, its sort of a selling tool some vendors use, the whole percentage off rap thing. Have you compared these stones to other comparables you can find online or locally? THAT pricing matters much much more than Rap. You could likely achieve the same end by buying G VS stones rather than E with SBF.

Re: stong blue in a pair of E 1carat rounds? will i look sil

I LOVE SBF- can't wait to see more pics!!!!
But have never heard of higher color stones turning "darker". Milky, yes, but not darker. And from what I've read very few actually turn milky.
I just bought a fancy purplish pink diamond with strong blue fluorescence and it positively glows the most intense blue under UV light. In direct sunlight-the purple sparks literally jump and sparkle all around the diamond. It is GORGEOUS!! I'd love to find a matching pair of very strong blue D or E trillants for the sides! I'm thrilled that the fluorescence affects prices on colorless diamonds. Unfortunately, since most pink diamonds have some fluorescence-it doesn't lower the price on them :((

FYI, GIA does not see blue fluor as a bad thing, in fact, they did a survey on it in 1997 which concluded it is more often a positive trait. Here's the link to the report, read the conclusion if you don't want to read the entire thing.

Hi, Sushi!

I don't know how to totally explain it...it almost glows a blue color, but only in absolutely direct UV light. I tried to get some pictures for you today, but I find it pretty hard to photograph (I'm also using my phone, so that could be part of it!). In all lighting except direct sunlight, it looks white (again, I'm not really color sensitive I don't think).

I'm guessing you'd probably not be standing in direct sunlight to the point that it'd be that noticeable...and I wonder if they're set as earrings if the sun is shining down, since it'd be coming at an angle if that would have an effect on how blue they'd really look anyway? And as for the club thing...as far as I know, they'd only glow under blacklight, and everyone looks ridiculous under blacklight...idk that people would be noticing your earrings in blacklight anyway!

You sound super excited for them, and they sound like a good deal, so I hope they work out for you!! ::)

I've attached a few pictures of my ring for you...again, they're not totally perfect, but as good as I could get. I also am posting one of it outside on a cloudy winter day so you can get an idea of what it usually looks like. And for what it's worth, I've had my ring since November of last year and thus far, I haven't had anyone say a thing about the fluoro. I showed my brother and he thought it was the coolest thing he'd ever seen, though! :sun:

Hi SJ,

Oh thank you for doing this for me! Thats so kind! Your stone is SOOOOO pretty. Actually I spent A LOT (too much..) time last night when I should be sleeping reading about florescence, and im actually very interested. The first point I was happy about was the size, I didnt to compromise on quality, however i really wanted as big stones as possible. I am worried they will look milky, but I suppose I will have to have a good look when I see them tomorrow....

Thank you again for your time!
