Hi guys! I''ve noticed that I can rotate a few of the stones in my shared-prong rings, but they don''t rotate on their own. Is this normal, or should I have it looked at? I''ve had my wedding ring set for about 2.5 yrs, but I''ve only gotten it looked at once during that time.

Also, I got it from an etailer. If it needs to be looked at, could you recommend any good places in the Chicago area that will do it even if I didn''t purchase the ring there? Thanks!

Not normal. The prongs need tightening. I think rings are supposed to have checkups every 6 months. Get on it!

ETA: Most any jewelry store will inspect & tighten prongs & clean a ring. I'd only trust someone really, really established with a good reputation though. I found a local jeweler that is awesome. Just takes some looking -- like finding a doctor or a dentist.

Yes, that should not happen, ditto Deco. DeeJay might have a recommendation or let me see if I can find a thread where she recommends a jeweler since she is in Chicago.

I''m not sure why more poeple don''t visit the jeweler every 6 months? Or heck, once a year? Out of my group of friends and neighbors, I''m the only one who cleans her jewelry and have the prongs checked ,etc. Plus it looks brand new again after being steamed and polished

Thanks guys! The reason that I haven''t had it looked at was that I wasn''t aware that jewelers would inspect it for me if I hadn''t bought it at their location.

Yup, the stones are loose, definitely get it checked out. It shouldn''t cost much to have them tightened and they should check it for free.

Most metals have a memory - they spring back a bit over time - yellow gold is generally worse than white gold and platinum is best of all.. So tightening can often be needed after a while.

But shared prongs are harder to push in place and expect them to stay.

It is not likely the stones will come out just because they can turn a little - any good jeweller or appraiser can give you a safty opinion. It might be extra scintillation for free
