Stone without certificate

I am looking at a stone from an online vendor. It is certified by EGL but the vendor mentioned that they would not send the certificate with it. It doesn’t really make sense to me. Wouldn’t it make sense that if you are purchasing a stone the certificate would also come along with it? I wanna make sure this isn’t some sort of scam

Update. The vendor said that EGL does not always send the actual certificate to them for the stone. Is this common place or sounding fishy?

You need the certificate, period. You also need to be able to look up the stone online to make sure it matches the stone they are showing you (e.g. certificate number and info matches). I also wouldn't buy a stone from EGL at all, so that's another consideration.

If you want to make sure you are not being scammed, you are headed in the wrong basic direction. You have chosen a diamond with a paper that may be somewhat inaccurate even if the diamond belongs to the paperwork. No one can be sure. You won't be safer or less safe buying a diamond without any documentation.

If you fear being scammed, then take the logical precautions of buying from recognized sellers who have a track record and integrity. These will be sellers who use formal Lab documents from world class respected labs that can be verified.

You may find ethical sellers who do not deliver the original report until you confirm your purchase. They will certainly agree to send a copy and show you the original report online, but once you say "ok" to the deal, then they will send you the original report for your records. I can't be sure exactly what your situation is by what you wrote.

When you cannot place some trust in the seller, then you truly should not begin a buying process with them. No one can help you once you send your money to a potentially fraudulent dealer. You need to be pro-active or you can lose your money and your time.

It's BS.

Like @oldminer said, some entirely ethical vendors will send a copy with the stone, but not send the original report until after the return period has passed. That way, the vendor does not have to go through the hassle (and expense) of getting another , original report if the customer does not return the original report when returning the purchased stone. So I don't have a problem with such a policy, and fwiw, I don't remember anyone here on PS reporting they never received the original from a reputable vendor with such a policy.

But that's not what you've been told.

Reading your other threads I see you are trying to find a 4+ carat stone for $25k or so. That is a very healthy budget and I admire the willingness. However, just my 2 cents you are traveling down the wrong path. We can help you find a great deal, but there aren't free lunches when you buy diamonds.

Short version -- EGL can't be trusted. Got sold F-SI1 and later graded by GIA as J-I2 and K-I1 w/ medium blue fluor. She is taking a bath on the original purchase price.

Yep, it is far better to just buy an I1 KNOWING it is an I1, imo.

all of this. You have a large budget, please dont spend it on something that isnt high quality. I think you are potentially going about this backwards. Think about quality over quantity. A large stone with poor cut wont look as good as a smaller stone with ideal cut

@Tubbsmalone - out of curiosity, I'm wondering if the vendor represented that the (elusive) EGL report was from EGL USA or EGL International (or EGL Platinum)?
