Stone ID modernist ring “FREW”

This ring is marked FREW obviously diamond for white stone, green one we thought might be beach glass but it almost looks like tourmaline. Any ideas on the green stone? I looked up his name and a couple things came up but not enough to see if frew is well known.

I saw that one! That might be one of the more unwearable rings I’ve ever seen!

Based on what’s posted on the internet, J Arnold Frew tended to work with semi-precious rather than precious stones, so tourmaline is a good guess. (The “fracturing” in the stone makes me think of emerald, but the color seems more like tourmaline to me.) If you own this ring, it might be worth your while to take it to a good jeweler or reputable pawn shop and ask them to test the stone with a refractometer. The testing shouldn’t cost too much. Alternatively, you can buy one yourself.

Apparently Frew was a modernist jeweler who worked in Southern California. It looks like the Norton Simon museum in Pasadena had an exhibit of his work in ~1965. I couldn’t find a catalog online, and it’s possible there wasn’t one produced. If you’re in the Los Angeles area, though, it might be worth your while to drop by the museum to see if they produced a catalog for that exhibit.

Looks like an emerald to me, those inclusions and the fact that it’s a cab.
