Stone Check

Hi everyone,

Went ahead and ordered a stone for an engagement ring. Want to get a second look to make sure I am not missing anything.

Most importantly, I want to make sure there is no yellow/brown hue since this is CVD and that there is nothing that screams "low quality" on this stone. This is an online order, but the vendor confirmed that there is no tinge to the stone.

I want it to look like a natural diamond so hoping you all can double check for me. Hoping the GCAL 8X offers some peace of mind that this will look good in person.

Thank you so much!

I’m not an expert, but it looks good to me. I’m sure others will chime in. Congratulations!

The CVD material looks a bit grainy in the magnified video. If the seller can get you videos in a variety of lighting conditions, then make sure that it doesn't go hazy in any of those lighting conditions.

In addition to what Deja said about the graining, I do believe this diamond has undertones of brown that aren’t reflective of the backdrop. @DejaWiz @Runningmama do you see any better options on Adiamor/Whiteflash/other reputable vendors with similar 4 C's that are around 5-6k?

I will share the videos of the 3.82 listed above when the vendor sends them to me.

Or maybe the better question to ask is, is my budget too low for what I’m looking to buy?

@DejaWiz thoughts on that 4 carat? No issues with blue nuance or anything else?

Hello, Hatchet7025 - it does not appear to have blue nuance...although it may still be a Type IIb depending on the grower's choice of how they do things.
Looks like a fine choice!

Hello @DejaWiz just to confirm: Your loupe360 and IGI report link are for the 3.59. I'm looking at the 4.0. No issues with blue nuance, bad light return, etc. on the 4.0?

Sheesh...I'm sorry!

Same comments apply: no visible blue nuance.
The optics look great to me!

Went ahead and ordered! THANK YOU SO MUCH! @DejaWiz @0-0-0 just for my own self-learning, would love to pick your brains on how you decided this stone is excellent.

As an amateur, I see HCA score of <1.0, diamond screener on the cusp of being outside of GIA-Ex, and a crown angle that is >35.0.

I understand that a diamond is much more than just its numbers - and cannot be judged solely on its numbers - but how did you decide that you are comfortable with it given these numbers? Are the restrictions below too strict and certain diamonds can have proportions that fall outside of the suggested ranges and still be great purchases?

Or is it that at this price range you can either have ideal proportions and blue nuance in HPHT or gray/yellow in CVD, or you avoid discoloring but have slightly "not ideal" proportions? And you prefer to avoid discoloration?

Or is it as simple as some diamonds look better than others, and the numbers are somewhat irrelevant, and your expert eyes know which ones to choose?

I ask because the 3.82 I initially suggested seemed to perform better "by the numbers", but you were able to find me a much better performing diamond that might looks worse on paper if you judged solely by the numbers.

40.6/35.1/57 combo is already relatively safe, then coupled with slightly longer lowers (they look to be around 77, and I'm guessing here) adds to help balance things out. Stars look to be at 50%, so good there...if the crown angle was slightly steeper (35.5-36), then I'd say 80 lowers with 45 stars would be the ideal recipe, based on teachings from Karl_K.
I see no concerns for any major cut/symmetry precision issues.

I look for good optical symmetry in videos. That’s usually a good sign that the cutter is at least putting in some effort and thought into a good cut. Given that, as long as the numbers are somewhat reasonable then personal preferences can come into play.

For my own stones I actually look for blue in D-G color HPHT and pink in H+ CVD as I like the colors and the discounts associated with them. It’s just trickier to avoid grey and brown undertones.
