Here''s a question for all you step cut nuts:

What is the smallest carat size where you can still see and appreciate the steps in the stone? Opinions on ECs and Asschers please.

Right now I''m considering a .78 carat EC and am wondering if it will be too small IRL. I''ll have images, ASET, IS, and Sarin report in a few days.

Thanks!

around 5mm for asscher
4mm or so on the narrow side for EC

Ditto what Storm said. I have a 5.85mm asscher and although it''s beautiful and all the steps are crisp and clear, diamond shrinking syndrome set in about a year after I got it.

Thanks for the input. I''m trying to make a tough decision for the long term.

Whether to get this .78 carat F-VS1 (5.60x4.82x3.23) - $2030

I''m waiting on the IS, ASET, and sarin

looks good so far

OR this 1.2 F-SI2 (6.2x4.7x3.2) - $4500

Haven''t called this in or asked for more info

1.23 carat F-SI2 EC.jpg

Obviously there''s a big size difference, the 1.2 has about 25% more area than the .78, but is 150% more $$$$.

Will the size of the 1.2 be worth the bump up in $$$$? I know this is the question everyone tackles.

that one is a maybe, center looks a bit dark.
IS or ASET would help

edit: just saw the si2 not likely to be eye clean

your the only one that can answer that.

You might try and find a H-g/vs to bring the cost down.

Ok I got the IS, ASET, and Sarin on the .78 carat.

NEED YOUR OPINIONS PLEASE :)

Hey Storm,

Thanks for the input.

Do you think there''s too much green in the ASET and not enough red?

For 1.2 F-SI2, not taking into account if it''s eye-clean or not, is it worth having the IS and sarin report run for the stone?

That smaller one is GORGEOUS!

I purchased two .75 EC''s last year planning on setting them with a 1.50 EC that I already owned as a 3 stone ring. I''ll say this...unless you''ve already seen a .75 EC I would encourage you to do so. They are fairly small to the eye.

ASET is fine

The 1.5 i suspect has p3 issues.
I think there are better ones out there to get info on.

That 0.75 EC is beautiful. I too have a 0.76 ct EC as my E-ring. Sometimes I do wish it were larger but the cut makes it sparkle/flash like crazy and since I love the icy E colour, I'm not upgrading it. I also set mine East West to give it the illusion of looking larger.
