I know there is a lot of information on this forum regarding the characteristics of a "steep deep" diamond, but the question I have is can a steep deep diamond score under a 2 on the HCA? The reason I''m asking is because I looked at a diamond today which I really liked, but the dimensions are close to a "steep deep". I looked at the diamond in jewelry store lighting as well as natural lighting outside and I did not see the "black ring" around the table, but since I don''t have much experience with diamonds I wanted to get other opinions. Also, I believe a 1.5 ct has diameter measurements of approx 7.5mm so why does this 1.40 ct only have a diameter of 7.12 - 7.16mm?

Below are the specs of the stone which scored a 1.4 (TIC Range) and the price is $8K. Thanks in advance for the help!

Steep/deep usually refers to crown and pavillion angle. Your stone scores a 1.4 on the HCA. The pavillion angle of 40.6 is not considered deep. The crown angle is steep but is offset by the shallower pavillion angle.

The diameter of the stone could be affected by the depth of the stone as the one in question has a depth of 62.5. 1.40 carat stones are generally a bit hard to come by (because folks like to get close to the 1.50 size but don''t want to pay the additional money to hit that 1.5 pricepoint) but you can do a search for some in the Diamond Prices toolbar at the top of the page. You''ll see a correlation between the overall depth of the stone and the diameter.

I appreciate the information. I guess I was a little confused because with all the information available on this websiite it''s a little tough to keep track of all the specifics. Buying an engagement ring is really an overwhelming process, but this website has been great!

Hi Matt

True steep deeps don't normally score below 2 on the HCA, the diamond you have there isn't a steep deep, the crown angle is steeper but the pavilion angle isn't. The diameter is facing up small for a 1.4 ct, check out these 1.40 Infinity for comparison but it is a bit small for the weight.
