Curious if anyone has or will be taking advantage of pre-tariff pricing on pearls while stock is still available? And were you already planning to make a purchase or did you decide to make one because of what's happening? Are you planning to wait all of this out and see what happens?

I saw Moline made a statement about having pre-tariffed inventory available; strangely I haven't seen any messages coming from Pearl Paradise or other popular vendors in the U.S. (if you have, please share!). I assume anything from Takahashi or General Pearl or other non-US vendors will be hit, although I've read conflicting things about whether it would hit people buying for personal use vs. retailers purchasing wholesale (can anyone decisively clear that up??).

Crazy to think about freshwaters having akoya-like price hikes!

If I had jewelry money, I'd so be buying from Andrew. At the moment it looks like a layoff is coming for me, and I'm pretty gutted. Luckily my husband has a decent job that should be safe, but it's sobering how fragile a security I've had for nearly two decades is.

Belt tightening ahoy, and a tearful (not really) farewell to Buccellati dreams. See you on Ban Island!

Oh man, I'm so sorry to hear about your job. I think belt tightening is top of mind for a lot of us right now. Wishing you the absolute best.

Thank you. Best of luck and financial survival to us all!

At first, it was layoff - then they said, well maybe, something can probably be done - now it looks like layoff again. And getting a new job at 65 is tough. Like Liam Neeson in Taken, I have a particular set of skills, and not a lot of places in commuting distance need them.

Also I have two more years till I can collect Social Security. With part time or barista work for the last two years, my payout will be substantially decreased.

Gotta remember I'm lucky - I should be able to keep food on the table and a roof over my head, even if it is mostly thanks to my husband.

Ugh that is so tough. I hope there might be circumstances that turn in your favor and you get to keep your job - or that a path is made clear for you. Please keep us posted on how you're doing!

So sorry to hear about your job insecurity . Know a few people;e who have lost big jobs lately , very difficult times ahead. for America.

As for buying from Japan in reading what the CPAA published it seems that all pearls, finished or loose are covered . It's a tax on the material that you pay for buying outside of the country... or really wishin the USA as well since it will just be added onto the cost and then marked up. So the 24% on Japanese imports would , I assume, be picked up when it enters the country and you'd pay it then. But this whole situation is crazy volatile and who knows what might happen for minute to minute.

i too am very worried about my job right now
fingers crossed we will both be ok

Volatile situation and tough times indeed. Wishing everyone the best and I apologize if this post came off as insensitive or tone deaf giving everything going on - I am feeling worry not just for all of us as consumers but also for our wonderful vendors, many of them small businesses with whom we've built up relationships. Hope we will all weather the storm!

Well, that’s a serious bummer. I hope you’re going to be okay.
