Hi there,

I would like to seek for your help regarding a diamond I've chosen yesterday. I've chosen the 1.01ct one as it is a really clean SI1 and it is only around 5.5% more expensive than the 1ct. Yet during my purchase I sometimes see the table of 1.01ct will somehow become not that shiny (return a dull colour) when looked at a certain angle, while the other seems have less this problem. I'm not sure if it is really a problem and I've never chosen a diamond before, so I choose to believe in the numbers instead of my eyes, as I'm afraid it is only my illusion. Just checked HCA and seems that 1ct one is really better in terms of cutting. Could anyone give me some advice if I should change to the other diamond? Thank you very much!

Neither - the crown angle is too low on both of them. If you could still exchange, I would...but stick to these parameters with GIA triple excellent stones:
Table: 54-58
Depth: 60-62.3
Crown Angle: 34-35 (sometimes 35.5 with a 40.6 pavilion angle)
Pavilion Angle: 40.6-40.9 (sometimes 41 with a 34 crown angle)

Thank you very much for your information, @ac117!

I've tried to search for diamonds that have the cutting you suggested, but due to the poor search engine in that shop (cannot sort by table% etc) I can only find a few manually.

Could you please help to take a look if they were better?

The third stone (1.05 H VS2) is the most promising of the bunch, although I'd still like to see an ideal scope since it looks like 2 arrows are washed out in the photo.

The first stone is shallow and has a huge table, the second is too deep and doesn't look like it would be eye clean. I understand the third is a bit more expensive, but the little extra will be worth it to get a stone that performs well when she will have this forever!

Must you use this shop? If so, and only if these choices, the HVS2 looks the best to me (not an expert). For one, the crown is higher while the pavilion, while not the most ideal angle, is much better. The other G has the same 40.8 pavilion with a 33.5 crown. And the other H shows similar specs, but the image is not as nice and there's a probably eye visible inclusion under the table and both of the SI stones have "clouds not shown" in the comments section.

However, if you are not bound to this supplier, post your budget and desires specs here and the folks on here (much more well-versed than I) can find you something spectacular. If, perhaps, it happens to be a stone in "virtual inventory," it may even be possible that your shop could call it in for you to see. Of course, in that event, you'd still want him to sell it for what you could get it for online…

Thanks a lot @ac117 @ringo865 !! Do you think the medium blue fluorescence matters?

I regret a lot that I didn't start research earlier, or else I may really go for the online shops which provide with much greater detail for me to make judgement...

Sad that I have already made deposit with this shop so I cannot switch to another one, and the search engine of the shop is poor so that I cannot quite find diamonds that fall into the range that @ac117 suggested. Anyway, thank you again you both for the opinions, and I'll try to negotiate for a better price!

Medium blue fluorescence is not an issue but you could just ask to confirm it isn't milky or hazy. It's very rare and usually only in strong fl/very strong fl stones but it's worth the question! I have a stone with strong blue fluorescence and love it!

I looked at all your links, comepeace, and the 1.05ct H VS2 is the ONLY stone you've linked which I like. The first two were way too large in the table and their angles are going to give you some nasty light leakage.

The next 2 diamonds are both SI2, and you're going to almost certainly see those big dark marks under the table, so I'd rule them out as well.

Then...the H VS2 with the nice stats...aaaaahhhh! :) I'd definitely go with that one if it's an option. Otherwise, I'd start again, but be willing to compromise on size. Better a small, beautiful diamond than a large, poorly performing one.
