My 6-ray star garnet has arrived from thegemtrader. The description is: 8.40 ct. Six-Ray Star Garnet

Color: Dark Slightly Purplish Red Clarity: Slightly Included
Origin: Brazil Cut: Round Cabochon
Treatments: None Measurements: 12.4mm
Well defined examples of Star Garnet are not particularly plentiful - and nearly all of these are 4-ray stars. This example is both well defined and the considerably rarer 6-ray variety. These have been documented from Idaho, but this example was purchased as Brazilian - again, unusual. The stone has a pleasing bodycolor and the star rolls easily over the entire surface. In the photo, we were attempted to highlight the star at the expense of the stone''s polish; it is not at all as irregular or pitted as it may appear.

First the vendor''s photo.

And now for some of my pictures. Sitting on the window sill in the afternoon sun.

In the morning sun. I noticed the reflection of my hands taking the picture.

Thank you, Freke.

I held up my hand to the stone. I love this picture.

A couple more mag light photos. The star really moves about. I think it is pretty cool.

I definitely notice the star legs vary in strength. It''s like there is the main line, then a secondary line, and finally the weaker third line.

One more picture. Thanks for looking.

Fly Girl - this is gorgeous!! I have never seen a Star Garnet before.

I have to admit, the one with your hand held up, until I read that you had held your hand up, it was a little spooky! But I see it was intentional now, so much MUCH less spooky now. LOL

It''s absolutely beautiful.

I love the photo of you hand waving out of the garnet! It looks like you''re trapped inside!

Have you seen the garnet under electric light yet? It might look even more beautiful!

Hi LD. I took a look under incandescent lights. The garnet is still dark purple and the star is more diffuse. I can see it moving around in the stone, but it doesn''t photograph well.

Hi Jypsie and thanks. Yeah, the reflections from this stone were annoying me. I finally decided to test it. It sort of looks like the hand is trapped inside the stone.

I''m absolutely fascinated by gems with asterisms

)

Do you plan to have it mounted in a piece of jewelry or will you keep it as a loose gemstone?

I gotta say, your pics are much better than the vendor pics! Though, the vendor pic is good. That is a beautiful and unique stone!

Very nice!

The quartz with multiple stars is also very interesting (and oh-so-tempting!)

I wonder if that Star-Garnet might be from Moscow, Idaho.
There's a gem mine up there (Garnet Queen Mine) where they are finding Star-Garnets.
Thanks for sharing the pictures.
Very nice Natural Star-Garnet.

Joker....

opps, Just noticed that this gem is from Brazil.

Very neat garnet! Are you going to set it or just keep it loose to play with?
