Heart prongs; never. Too cutesy as in ''isn''t that sweet''

Yes, that!

Double claws I just am not a fan of heart shaped prongs

Thank you guys so much! Just to clarify part of my decision making and also the facts behind my stone: First, I''m not a fan of single prongs for my ring b/c I have done that already and I want a change. So that''s out. The diamond isn''t 2.00 carats, so to whatever extent a larger stone requires double prongs, that is out too. The split prong I like is really a single prong split down part way. The heart prong I am considering is a lot like the split prong except that instead of being technically split it is just indented going to the point with a VERY slight heart shaped indentation where it first covers the diamond. So I am not really talking about noticeable "hearts" for the one, and I am not really talking about two separate prongs for the other. The best picture of the type of heart prong I had in mind that I could find today was Belle''s ring. But I saw it at WF''s offices and you can''t really tell they are heart shaped. They are just really subtle in that way. I think that when you blow up a picture on a computer screen things look much bigger and more pronounced than they appear in real life. I think this is certainly true with regard to heart prongs that are done the way I saw them at WF in person. I mean you honestly couldn''t tell they were "hearts" unless you stared at it after Brian pointed it out. I love both prong types but I am having a hard time choosing. I really appreciate everyone''s input and hopefully some other people will share their thoughts. THANK YOU GUYS AGAIN!

Isabelle, it sounds to me as if you really like the prongs you have described here and should go with them. As you''re the only one that has seen them IRL at WF.
Me personally, I agree with others that split claws I like on larger stones, otherwise I prefer single claws. I really like Belle''s that you linked too, but not sure if I''d choose them over the others.

I agree. It does sound like you really like the heart prongs that Brian showed you.

Honey, you don''t have to justify your personal preference to us. It''s YOUR ring! If you love the heart prongs, get them! End of story.

You guys are so nice. I am so torn between the two. I LOVE split prongs. And I normally don''t like the overtly heart shaped prong, but when they are subtle, to be honest, it looks a lot like a split prong but without a gap between the metal. There isn''t a huge amount of difference. One of the things I DESPISED about my old setting was how the prongs covered the diamond. I want small prongs with a cool design element. I was sort of thinking one that no one overtly notices, but that adds to the setting. IOW, I don''t want someone to say "Hey, great prongs!" I was hoping more for, "What a beautiful ring". I DEFINITELY DO NOT WANT: "Are those hearts??" LOL :-) I would bet that if you saw Belle''s ring IRL, you wouldn''t see hearts unless you really stared at it or she pointed it out. Who knows? I truly, truly cannot decide. I love them both. Single prongs are out of the question b/c I am just over them. :-)

Thanks you guys again!!

Well, if you are bored with single prongs, do you think double prongs would be enough of a change to spice it up for you? It really does sound like you are leaning towards the hearts, but if you aren''t sure, you could always do a pros & cons list, maybe?

Here''s another Mark Morrell ring that has a RB center stone and 4 heart prongs: click here

I kind of like it

I like the double claw prongs the best, then single claw prongs, then heart prongs, then standard bead 4-prongs, then standard 6 prongs. Claw prongs in my opinion look expensive and elegant.

Thanks Gwen! That isn''t a bad idea. Or I could just pick one and hope for the best. LOL

Thanks for the link Lexie! I LOVE MM''s work. It''s so pretty.

Thanks for your input Kcoursolle. I really love the look of claw prongs too, but I do hesitate with a stone that is less than 7mm in diameter overpowering it with too much prong emphasis. Double claws look great on a 2+ carat cushion or round, but I just don''t know if they would work with a roughly carat weight RB. It''s a tough call! I guess I should take Gwen''s advice and just make a pros and cons list.

On that note, does anyone know of any PSers who have split prongs on a 1 carat stone?? Thanks again guys! :-)

I love the Mark Morrell prongs, I always have. I love the split prongs too, but I would love a MM ring of my own, just for the prongs. :)

I agree San Diego lady. His prongs are great.

Have any of you ever seen claw prongs on a ~ 1 carat RB? I am worried that they might overwhelm the stone. But I could be wrong. :-)

I''m sure it will come as no surprise that I favor the heart prongs, since I also got them.

They are really subtle; they aren''t blatantly noticeable until you point them out. I''ve worn my ring for 4.5 years now and haven''t regretted going with the heart prongs.

Thanks Allison. This was my impression as well when I saw such a ring at WF IRL. The hearts were fantastic and they were so, so subtle. I loved it. :-) I guess I will decide soon.

Well as fate would have it, I saw a friend of mine today at a birthday party. She just got married and I was studying her Ritani halo ring. She has a 1.20 RB mounted with DOUBLE CLAW PRONGS in the center! Who would have thought it? Is that kismet or what? Anyway, guess what? They looked fantastic and not at all overwhelming to the center diamond. I loved it. But I have to say that just to put into perspective how small these prongs are IRL, she didn''t even realize that her prongs were double prongs until I pointed it out. She had literally no idea and she has been married since September. See, we live in an alternate universe over here PS. We really do. We think that people know what type of prongs are on their ring, and most of them have no idea. These were very subtle. They were as subtle as the heart prongs on the WF W prong ring I saw. And they were beautiful. So now I know that both prong styles work really well with a 1 carat RB. So it is just a matter of deciding... :-)

Between those two choices, I would choose very tiny split prongs. I think the most beautiful prong tips are those that are almost invisible and allow the diamond to be the star! My Leon prongs are single, but they are so delicate that my stone looks 100% round even though it is 4 prong. Heart prongs seem to stick out more on smaller stones while they do on larger ones, so that would not be my choice.

Diamondseeker, I am on the same page with you. I want subtle, subtle, subtle prongs. I want them to be so small for exactly the reason you articulate. I want the focus to be on the diamond. :-) Thank you for your input. Your ring is really beautiful.

Isabelle, I am in the same boat as you and DS on this one - I am going to have single claw prongs made soon that will *hopefully* look half as nice as DS''s!

I am sure you have already thought of this, but your description I highlighted above just made me think perhaps slight "security risk"..I''m sure you will be able to discuss this with your jeweler, but I would be cautious that the prongs weren''t so thin/small as to pose a risk to losing your stone, kwim?

It sounds like it will be a lovely project - my apologies if I missed it, but did you mention who you were having make it?

Hi Arjunajane! Thank you for your input! I do know what you mean. I don''t want the diamond to fall out. But I think I was just scared by my old prongs. They got crooked over time, they looked disastrous on my beautiful diamond. They were way too big and I grew to really not like them. I don''t know if you remember, but WF is recutting my RB. Actually, it has been recut. I am meeting with Brian Gavin tomorrow to see it and then hopefully select a setting for it. I plan to post the new stats on it once I get it back. I''m pretty excited. :-)
