My mother passed along a few pieces of jewelry to me recently, and I wondering if there is any way I could determine whether or not the 'spinel ring' I have is natural or synthetic. She has no idea. Are there any properties that I could easily look for and would determine what it is? If I take this ring, which I would *guess* is synthetic, in to be evaluated by a professional here in Perth, more than likely the cost would be higher than the actual value of the stone! :nono:

I believe a synthetic spinel will have a different refractive index. I think a appraiser who is familiar with colored stones can be hard to find in some areas. I brought my spinel to Martin Fuller in VA. He is very good and the hourly rate reflects that. He will give you a full written appraisal (2 hard copies and electronic), pictures, and educate you about your stone. There are other positive reviews about him on PS.
