My brother recently purchased a purple spinel diamond ring for his wife. He paid $150 which leads me to believe it is fake. Is a spinel diamond a real diamond?

Natural spinel does come in purple and you can get stones for $150. But there is also a lot of man made spinel around too and with the word diamond taged on the end it sounds like it could be synthetic. I guess you'd have to have someone look at it to be sure.

a spinel diamond..never heard of that...are you sure it''s not a spinel with diamond accents? A spinel and a diamond are nothing alike.
"Is a spinel diamond a real diamond?" If your brother somehow happened upon a purple diamond it would cost a lot more than $150.

it does have diamond accents. What is a spinel?

Thank you

spinel is the secret of the gem world...the general populace doesn't really know about them but lovers and conissuers of gems do...it's are little secret..give me a spinel any day over a treated ruby or sapphire

No problem. You might also want to do a search here in the colored stone forum. If you want to see some photos check out the vendors sites listed in the sticky post above.

It seems like he meant that it is a purple spinel in a diamond accented setting. A purple spinel can be had for around $150 if it is around 1 ct and depending on the quality. Spinels are underappreciated in the gemstone world; they come in a variety of colours, untreated, good for everyday wear and relatively inexpensive except for the top blues and reds.

Here''s a bracelet consisting of only Spinels. You can see that it comes in a huge variety of colours

Oh LD that braclet is awesome...love the slight color change from gem to gem and back

Very nice! Maybe the spinel people should put you in charge of their PR! (Or maybe not, if the connoisseurs want to keep the price low.)
