I''m considering buying this diamond for 7K. . . what do you guys think?

specs:

Shape: Round Brilliant
Meas: 6.66 - 6.7 x 3.93 mm
Weight: 1.05 carat
Depth: 58.8%
Table: 59%
Girdle: Medium, Faceted
Cutlet: None
Polish: Very Good
Symmetry: Excellent
Clarity: VS2
Color: D
Fluorescence: Nonoe
Comments: Surface graining is not shown

I think it looks nice (this is I know the ultimate test). . .is the deal reasonable?

More numbers, we need more numbers!!!

Crown and pavilion angles are critical in determining the cut of a stone. Also, IMVHO, I think that generally the table % should be less than the total %, but there may be acceptable exceptions to that. ???

Regarding price, did you do a PS search on similar stones? That is the best way to find out if the price is competitive.

There are lots more people here LOTS more qualified than me to give any opinions, though. They'll chime in, you'll see!

I know I know!. . .that's all I have. . .

I didn't think it was that big of an issue just because ideal depth is 59%. . . though I know the table should probably be a bit smaller. . .I don't think I could get the other numbers. . .but at any rate I'm leaning towards buying it.

an online search has shown me stones for similar prices. . . but I can't bring myself to shop online. . . just because I'd really like to see it before I buy. . . I almost did it but I just felt more comfortable looking at it. . . don't know why.

you're absolutely right. . .it's not that I have any hesitation about buying online. . .it's just there's somthing about seeing it. . . I am interested in what you said about the table percentage being bigger than the depth. . .I would say that this is my one major concern. If someone could let me know one way or the other that would be great!

I appreciate your help!

It seems to be a pretty fair price, expecially considering that the diameter (actual size) of the stone is closer to an ideal cut 1.12 carat stone, vice a 1.05 carat stone, which is becuase of the shallow depth. Now whether that increase in size is at the expense of the quality of the cut, is tough to tell without more information, as Lynn pointed out. There is a possibility, that the stone has excellent proportions., but it's impossible to tell without more than just depth and table. Saying that a good appaiser should be able to get you more info on the stone, which brings up another point. You can see stones on-line before you buy them. One way is through pictures. Another, even better way, is once you've found one that meets all your criteria, you can have it sent to an independent appraiser in your area and actually look at it with your own eyes before you buy it. Anyway, an appraisal's always good to have if only for insurance purposes, so it doesn't hurt anything to have one done, either on the stone you're looking at now, or one that find on the initernet. Best of luck in your search.

Magnum has a good point. Most if not all internet vendors will ship a stone to an appraiser near you so that you can view it before you buy it. You can have a couple of stones sent from one or a couple of vendors in order to be able to compare and pick. You are then responsible for the return shipping of the one(s) you do not keep. I think it is a great way to go if you don't have a good selection or prices in your local B&M's.

that's great information guys. . .thanks for all your help!
