Specs for Emerald Cut

WOW! Thanks...you guys (and gals) are great! So, I received the GIA Report number, and have provided the specs below. As I said, the diamond was $5700 and the Tacor designer ring was $1300; bringing my bottom line to $7000. I usually buyer''s remorse with sort of tag, so I would really appreciate it if you let me know what you think.

Carat Weight - 1.20
Color/Clarity - G VS2

Proportions - Depth (67.6%) Table (74%)
Girdle - Medium to Thick
Cutlet - None
Polish - Very Good
Symmetry - Good
Flourescence - None

The table is large in proportion to the depth, possibility that the diamond could look glassy in some lights and also have a shallow crown height. This can indicate the stone won't show much fire. Also without images we can't check the patterning and overall cut quality of the stone which is very important. From the info given and from what can be ascertained from that info you could do better, I take it you have seen the diamond in person?

out of curiosity, which setting did you choose and what metal?

Thanks again. I didn''t think about the glassy look. I was basically under the assumption that emerald cuts didn''t show much fire due to it having less brilliance. But, I have looked at the diamond in person, I didn''t see anything wrong with it; however, it''s not like I know exactly what to look for. I mainly took an interest in the color/clarity, and wanted to make sure I stayed about SI clarity.

And as far as the setting that I choose, I purchased setting 2620ECSMP. I bought at a discount price from a store going out of business; BBB. Also, you said the table was a little much in comparison to the depth, and that I could do better. Could you provide a range I, and other purchasers like myself, should look for?

Here are some basic guidelines you can use for inital screening but if you love a stone and it doesn't quite match up to these guidelines that is ok.


depth 70% or less
table 65% or less
crown height 10% and above

Then the rest is images or you can order an ASET scope you can use to check out these diamonds in person.

Well cut emerald cut diamonds have excellent fire; they are just fewer/less often but the flash is large due to the size of the step. I agree with the table being large, potentially giving it a glassy look. Coupled with the depth of 67%, I doubt the crown height will be over 10%.

I agree: the stone is very likely carry most of its weight on the bottom and will be very disappointing once it is a bit dirty and in a setting. My EC is 62.5 depth/62 table with 11 as a crown height--even a bit grimy it still performs

In regards to crown height, how can I know (learn) the crown height if the GIA report only provides depth and table percentages? Is there a calculation I could use to determine the crown height?

You could ask the seller to run a Sarin scan to get the crown height. Also yes a well cut EC will still show fire, in some cases you can have some beautiful flashes of fire, to me they perform differently to rounds, just as beautiful in their own way though.
