When is a spacer band needed?

I've never used one.

I'm not sure if I should now buy a spacer band, or just go with wearing two rings together without something between them. Except for my wedding set, I've never worn two rings together. However now, I want to add a diamond band with some of the rings I've been wearing solo.

Does a spacer band rub on the metal of the rings next to it?

will the diamond touch the other ring ?

some one suggested recently somewhere around these parts,
buy a cheap silver spacer ring and see if you like the look
the silver band will be scarficed while you make up your mind

The new diamond band will be platinum. However, I'd like to wear it with both white gold (both 14K and 18K) and platinum rings that I already have. A couple of my older rings have some engraved detail in their metal work. Therefore, I'm concerned about damaging that.

Right now, I'm trying to decide between either a channel set or bezel design for the new diamond band. Either way, the diamonds shouldn't rub anything. However, the metal of the rings may rub each other. I worry about excessive wear on my original rings from an additional diamond band.

A thin spacer band was originally suggested to keep the rubbing at a minimum.

However, I'm not super crazy about the idea of adding a third ring unless it's really necessary to protect the other two rings from each other. Frankly, a spacer band doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

But maybe that's because I don't understand spacer bands. The one suggested would be 1.3mm wide.

I wear spacers with several of my stacks to avoid prong and/or stone girdle contact. Feel like in many stacks they are a must. That said, all of mine are 1mm or less. Here are a few photos.


The twisted gold is a 1mm spacer

Just below the three stone is a WG .75m spacer

spacer would be needed if youve got an engagement ring, and your wedding ring is diamond pave, or vice versa. the diamond pave on a band will rub against the other ring, and its especially bad if your wedding ring is diamond pave because itll rub against the prongs of your diamond, making it more likely to damage your prongs (and possibly lose the diamond)

I didnt realize this until years after wearing a pave band next to my engagement ring (non pave) but looked and saw the prongs had a full-on dent in them.

I dont like the look of spacer bands or having to wear 3 bands, so instead opted for no diamonds on bands (plain engagement solitaire, plain gold wedding band)

Photo of one of the rings that I'd like to pair with a diamond band. However, I don't yet have the diamond band... So, I have no photos of it to show of it.

Right now, I'm trying to decide what kind of diamond band I want. And if I need a spacer band at all.

Another ring I'd like to occasionally wear with a diamond band:

This one concerns me the most because the milgrain filigree is 18K gold. It seems to me that even the thinnest of spacer bands would rub on it.

Yes you wouldnt need a spacer band if you didnt have diamonds on your wedding band, in my opinion - because they wouldnt rub against the solitaire's prongs.

I'll post more photos of these ring when I someday get them. At the moment the 5 stone diamond is out having the shank redone and the ruby needs to be resized for me to get it on my ring finger. The Ceylon Sapphire is one of my oldest rings. So I probably have some head-on shots of it somewhere in my photo archives.

That's what I originally thought myself.

I'm looking to pair my current rings with a diamond band ring. However, that diamond band ring won't have any diamonds directly exposed that might rub.

I would like to get either a channel set or bezel designed band. Right now, I'm leaning toward bezel to coordinate with the 5 stone diamond ring. However, even with the diamonds not being exposed (like with pave), the metal around the diamonds in the band may rub against the 18K gold milgrain and damage the filigree. The same could be true of even full size, plain band.

That's why I thought that maybe - by only having the lower part of the platinum bezels on the 5 stone ring come directly in contact with other metal - a really thin spacer band would lessen possible damage. A spacer band might spare the 18K filigree.

At the moment, I feel like I'm going in circles. Maybe these particular rings shouldn't be worn with another ring... I don't know. However, I would like to pair them on occasion.

If I would go with a thin spacer, should it be white gold or platinum? I'd be wearing a platinum band ring next to another ring of both metals.

The next question is how comfortable (or uncomfortable) is adding a spacer band? Except for my wedding set, I normally don't stack rings. So, I have little experience.

Unfortunately, I'm allergic to silver. I can't try silver (as suggested) for a relatively inexpensive, "try-it" spacer. Meanwhile, the pricing I've gotten for a platinum spacer band is pretty high. I don't want to invest in one before I get Pricescope feedback to help satisfy some of the questions I have in my mind.

As for the Ruby and Sapphire rings. Lovely but make sure no dining that’s up not bezeled rubs those as they are a 9 and diamond a 10 on the Mohrs scale. And the scale is not linear, but logarithmic so bear in mind that a 10 Is much harder, much than a 9.

The Ceylon sapphire ring is platinum. The Burnese ruby is just 14K white gold. As far as I can tell any band ring that I would pair with them would only touch the metal on each and none of the stones (diamond accents included). However, I am still concerned about damaged to the metal.

The sapphire was a custom-made ring that my husband bought me many, many, many anniversaries ago when we spent some time in Southeast Asia. So that one has strong emotional sentiments for me. I'd rather not wear it with another ring than risk damage. On the other hand, I think it would be pretty with a diamond band. So, I'd like to pair it with the diamond band I want to get - but only if the new band doesn't harm the metal work of the sapphire ring.

I've been considering a spacer band to try to protect my main rings (any and all of them) from rubbing by an added accent diamond band.

Although I do have some very high-quality pieces, I don't have extra "money to throw away". Therefore, I've been very cautious in my jewelry purchases. I try to only buy things I know that I will really wear. Plus, I try to protect the jewelry I already have.

That's why I've come to Pricescope for advice. I love the extra bling that additional diamonds can provide. At the same time, I'm trying to also go the route of practicality.

That makes sense now.

However, both the ruby and sapphire stones would be well above any additional band that I would wear with those rings. Their girdles wouldn't be touching any metal of the new diamond band that I'd like to add. My big concern is metal rubbing against metal.
