Hi there,

I've been doing research and looking at diamonds in person for the last several week and, while I learned a lot (especially from here), I feel I'm a little bit overwhelmed by the choices out there.

So my guideline of diamond hunt is:
Princess cut on solitare setting
~1.25 carat (doesn't matter if a little lighter or heavier, but I do hope to have a stone with a bigger surface, e.g. 5.95mm x 5.95mm)
F, G, H color are acceptable,
VS1, VS2, SI1 if eye clean are acceptable.

My highest budget is 8000, which means I can actually get a solasfera princess of 1.22 ct, G, VS2. But I do hope to explore the more economic choices.

The other day I located a 1.22ct H VS2 princess cut at a store in Diamond district in NY, which I think is pretty good looking by itself and very reasonable price. The parameters are: Table 68%; Depth 76.6%, Polish Good; Symmetry Good; Grid M-XTK, 5.77 x5.68x 4.35.
Will this 76.6% depth be a deal killer here (except that I do hate that it has a relatively small surface)?

Another one I found attractive is this
http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/H-VS1-Ideal-Cut-Princess-Diamond-1260647.asp

Cut: Ideal
Color: H
Clarity: VS1
Certificate: GIA

Depth: 71.8%
Table: 67.0%
Polish: Very Good
Symmetry: Very Good
Girdle: Thin to thick, faceted
Culet: None
Fluorescence: None
Measurements: 6.14*5.88*4.22
Ratio: 1.04

Does this one look like a promising choice?

So you guys can see that I do tend to control the budget under $6500 for the stone itself. I probably want to find the stone and finalize the purchase really soon, so this is like an urgent SOS! Any suggestions and recommendations will be gratefully welcomed!

BTW, for the vendors in new york diamond district, is it really reliable to let them do the settings for an engagement ring?

Thanks again!

here is another option
http://www.briangavindiamonds.com/diamond/diamond-detail/?product_id=AGS-104044774001

request ASET for JA stone, this one might be nice also
http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/G-VS1-Premium-Cut-Princess-Diamond-1248963.asp

ETA...did you look at the diamond in different lighting? that can have a large effect on how the diamond looks. it is hard to tell just by the numbers especially on a princess cut. If you can compare it to an AGS0 stone that would tell more but ultimately if you like it then that is all that matters, you just want to make sure you are making an informed decision.

76.6% depth in and of itself isn't a dealbreaker. Depths up to 78% are pretty common in ideal princesses.

You'd have to ask for an ASET on the James Allen stone, and you can do this for only 3 stones in their inventory, for what it's worth. Also keep in mind that the JA stone will be visibly off-square, but probably noticeably larger than the one you saw at the B&M.

Some other ideas:

I almost hate to post this one, because I'm actually considering it as an upgrade for myself...

A little above budget, but it's a Solasfera if you like that look:

More JA stones to look into:

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/H-VS1-Premium-Cut-Princess-Diamond-1327016.asp (has a chunkier look, opposite of a Solasfera, but I really like it!)

Considering that a lot of the JA stones in the 1.2-1.3ct range were way under budget, I also figured I'd find you the biggest princess you can get for about $7000 with your color/clarity specs. Only when I looked at James Allen, nothing spoke to me in a large size (in terms of cut). However, dropping the clarity to I can buy you this stone, which looks promising:
http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/I-SI1-Ideal-Cut-Princess-Diamond-1311153.asp 1.51 I/SI1 for $6850...think about it!

FWIW, I have an I color princess, and while at times I get the urge to upgrade to a higher color just to keep up with the Joneses, I keep reminding myself that I really can't see the tint at all. If you're not all that color sensitive, check it out!

Thank you all so much for the reply!

I actually checked the BGD diamond before posting here and yes, this one looks adorable. For the similar price and parameters here, I think I prefer to go to David S. Diamond which I can see the solasfera diamonds in person.

JA recently doesn't have many choices for bigger diamonds in my budget range and I personally hope to get color H or higher, as I think I am a bit color sensitive.

Another question is in a physical diamond store where idealscope is not available and ASET images can not be provided, what would you do to make sure you are buying a well performing stone??

I'm going to a couple of stores tomorrow and wish me luck!

Be sure to look at the stones in a lot of different lighting conditions. Don't get fooled by the miracle of jewelry store lighting and end up with a stone that doesn't perform well in regular lighting conditions!

Thanks again for your reply jstarfireb!

I will bear that in mind. So different lighting conditions would probably mean indoor under the light/in the corner, outdoor. What else conditions do you suggest? I sometimes try to use my hand to circle around the stone to separate it from the direct light and see the performance in this dimmer condition. Do you think this would help in anyway?

Again, a lot of thanks to the people inputting their opinions in this post:)

also, if you can, compare the stone side by side with an AGS0 stone.

Yup, if you're lucky maybe the dealer will carry a branded super-ideal like Hearts on Fire or Solasfera princesses. Keep in mind that branded cuts tend to be way more expensive in B&M stores, whereas the online branded/signature ideal cuts at GOG, WF, etc. tend to have a lower premium.

ETA: But seriously think about buying online. When you're at a B&M jewelry store, you're subject to pressured sales tactics and miraculous lighting conditions that could sway you in the wrong direction. You can easily get taken by dishonest salespeople. You have only your eye to judge whether a diamond is well-cut, and I certainly trust objective measure far more than my subjective eye. Online, we have a small circle of trusted vendors that provide mountains of information, and you can browse without ever feeling pressured to buy. And there's always a return policy.

ooh, that will be good to see solasfera princesses in person. I would compare non-branded princesses to those and pick what your eyes prefer.
