So my girlfriend and I were out of the country on a 2-week trip, but we were coming back home on different days because we booked on miles and couldn't get the same return flight. I got in at noon on Saturday, rented a car, and drove about 7 hours to go up and ask for her dad's blessing, then turned right back around and drove home because I was supposed to pick her up from the airport the next morning. At 7am on Sunday she called to tell me she was actually able to catch an earlier connection, so she'd be getting in at 9am instead of 11am. I wasn't ready at all, so I got dressed and hustled over to my friend's place to get the ring (Quest had sent it to him the day before since I was out of town), and ran back home to set up our apartment, which is where I was planning to ask her.
At about 9am my cell phone started ringing and I decided to just let it go. I wasn't going to have time to get everything ready and pick her up, so I pretended to oversleep. After about 30 minutes and the 5th or 6th call, I picked up the phone and acted like the alarm hadn't gone off and apologized for sleeping through everything. I said I'd be right there to pick her up, but she said she was already in a cab, which was what I was hoping for at that point. I changed back into pajamas to kind of sell the oversleeping story and waited for her taxi to pull up. As soon as they stopped on our street, I went out to the cab and apologized a bunch and started helping her take her bags out. She was understanding about the oversleeping thing but I think a little annoyed too, which was great. So we walked up to our building, I opened the door to the apartment, dropped the bags, and took a knee right there in the doorway. She was totally surprised. And said yes.
Here's a photo of the ring. I know, a blurry and terrible Blackberry picture, I need to take and post some more... Anyway she loved the setting (I went with the platinum Vatche 6-prong solitaire) and the diamond has a nice sparkle to it. I told her afterwards that I'd have no hard feelings about getting something different (even showed her the JBEG modified Julia to show her what else I was considering), but she said what I got was perfect, exactly the style she would have wanted. So all we've done is have it resized. I had minor nagging thoughts about the other diamond I had seen online at JA, but in the end the ring looks great, she loves it, and it was there with us for the proposal.
Anyway can't thank you all enough for your help, really couldn't have done it without you.
