I now christen the forum with my first post.

I''m sure you''ll christen me later with some replies, toasts of champagne, gratuitous praise, but there might be some years before the latter two.

The metal with the most shine (lights.... flashin''...) hmm, without looking fake.

The toughest metal... (ie, you''ve got a dent in yer ring)

Now that I''ve been lurking, educating myself on diamonds; I''m scared to death to think of settings. But I need to know how long I have to take a second job. *barf* And to know how long before I can be a rock star.

Go for platinum if you can afford it. It will occasionally need to be polished, but white gold will eventually lose it''s rhodium plating and have to be replated since it will take on a slightly gold color.

Palladium is getting more popular, but I''d have to see what a palladium ring looks like after 10 or 20 years to decide if it is adequate. Everything looks good when new. But I want to know what something is going to look like over time.

Vickers hardness.
Relative density.

I agree with DS, go for Platinum if you can. Its definitely worth the extra money. I want something that I can pass down to my children, and for them to pass it down to theirs.....
