Anyone hear this cover of the Sound of Silence by Disturbed?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u9Dg-g7t2l4

I heard it for the first time while driving, and had to pull over and use my SoundHound to figure it out. Apparently, according to DD, they are heavy rock band, and you hear a bit of that at toward the end. I LOOOVVEE the drama of this. The way it makes me hear the lyrics in a new way, as though for the first time. Extraordinary. Listen to the whole thing, or you miss the best parts.

Do you know of songs where the cover/remake/remix is better or almost better than the original? :wavey:

ILander when I heard that song last week I was so mesmerized, I had to wait to get out of the the car. It is haunting and I loved it. I got chills hearing it again. But that song reminds me of my deceased parents and my childhood. Thank you for linking the video. Off to download.

Eva Cassidy's version of "Over The Rainbow". This is actual footage of her singing it. I just found it, have never seen/heard it before.

She died much too young....

You reminded me of Iz's version of over the rainbow - he died too, ;(

I am not sure how I feel about this version of the song. Video is dark for sure. Very interesting version. Thank you for posting!

Love and loved Jeff Buckley.

Scala & Kolacny Brothers' cover of Radiohead's "Creep"

Sturgill Simpson's cover of Nirvana's "In Bloom"

Chris Stapleton's cover of George Jones' "Tennessee Whiskey"

10,000 Maniacs' cover of Bruce Springsteen's "Because the Night" (MTV Unplugged version)

Shinedown's cover of Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Simple Man"

Great thread, ilander!

I too love Rufus Wainwright's version of Hallelujah. His voice is so pure.

There are so many good covers of 'Over The Rainbow.' Both Eva Cassidy's and Iz's are standouts.

Two that I can think of right now are Preston Pohl's cover of "Electric Feel" from The Voice:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q67UtuUgTpo

and Gary Jules version of Tears For Fears' 'Mad World'

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4N3N1MlvVc4

I remember the first time I heard Jules's version I thought it was so haunting; I knew I recognized it, but it took some brain wracking for me to remember who originally did it because it was so different.

Off to listen to all the covers listed by LadyMCh.

Ryan Adams. Wonderwall. Love this song and my dh made a mix tape for me when we were first dating with the original version of this song which is more upbeat. But this remake is much sadder and I love it.

Original version in the mix tape from the 90s and the version on my mix tape.

Johnny Cash. Hurt. Love this song. Original by Nine Inch Nails.

Just want to add I love the original versions of these songs too and listening to the originals vs the remakes I love them all for different reasons.

Good thread iLander. I love all the remakes of the songs listed on this thread. And that version of Sounds of Silence is haunting. LOVE it. Thanks for sharing all these songs and I enjoyed listening to every one of them!

I love that version of The Sound of Silence. Such an amazing voice and emotion.

The original, to me, seems to speak more of individual isolation while this represents the isolation of a whole fragmented society, where people can't relate or listen to others that don't agree with them.

The First Cut is the Deepest -- Rod Stewart's voice put the hurt and the hope in it better than Cat Stevens or P. P Arnold or Keith Hampshire. Better than anybody, I think.

Ryan Adams re-did Taylor Swift's entire 1989 album. And of course made it 500% better.

Mony Mony - Billy Idol. That song just needed Billy Idol. Tommy James and the Shondells released it too far ahead of its time. lol

Another one... I don't think this version is necessarily better. It's just fun!

That's what I thought, too! It made me think of the election (people talking without listening). I also loved the symbolism at the end of everyone in the same boat.

Awesome songs, guys! :wavey: I learned a lot, and enjoyed some really great music in this thread, thank you all!!

Here's one where I think the (now) obscure original was better than the well-known remake.

This is the original version, which I believe is by far the best, of Dolly Parton's I will always love you.

What an awesome lady she is: talented, intelligent and a businesswoman. You have to admire that. And no, I'm not a big country music fan, I just admire her ability to build a 40 year music career while still being classy.

I knew I had heard the Disturbed song used somewhere else. Found it and it brings me to tears...

Wow, that is beautiful. Interesting how there the use of the song makes the version sound angry and righteous rather than angry and disillusioned.

Hiya ilander! All is pretty good with me. Things have been getting better and better, as maturation sets in, lol! How are you? Do you actually live in the Keys? Sorry to threadjack your thread - hope you are okay with the storm coming your way. Big Ginormous hugs back to you!

ETA: couldn't agree more about Dolly Parton :))

HI:

Great thread.

I prefer Sara Polly's version of "Courage".
I prefer Bare Naked Ladies version of "Lovers in a Dangerous Time".
Dolly Parton is really her own benchmark for "Jolene"...yet Miley Cyrus has a cool vibe singing in a garden...garden series or something like that.
I prefer Nina Simone's version of "Sinner Man".
I prefer Three Dog NIght's version of "Black and White".

I know there are dozens of others....

cheers--Sharon

Peter, Paul and Mary's version of "Jetplane" of John Denver's original tune.
Judy Collin's version of Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now" (I am a bigger fan of the latter than the former).
I like K.D. Lang's version Of Hallaujuah.
Carol King's version of 'You've Got a Friend" which I believe was written by James Taylor.
Linda Rondstadt's "That'll be the Day"(Buddy Holly) and "Heatwave" (Martha and the Vandella's) ( I could name more-huge fan).
